p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A new foot for the 70-200 f/2.8...!

Hey guys,

in my quest on how to improve stability on both Nikon's 70-200 lenses, after reviewing the Kirk collar for the 70-200 f/4, I decided this time to give the Really Right Staff foot & plate replacement for the 70-200 f/2.8 a try. Here it is:

http://medias.photodeck.com/d1012d46-cc9f-11e2-98a5-f7ad21eb282d/_DP3M_0215_xlarge.jpg

Both the foot & plate are of the highest quality, and they work very well. You can read my review of the RRS foot and replacement plate

HERE

Best,

Vieri

Dude, I am not saying is news, is just my review of it I have been doing researches on tripod stability for both the 70-200 f/4 and the 70-200 f/2.8, I bought and tried some stuff and wanted to share my findings. I am sorry this disturbs you, and I hope someone else might find it interesting since there isn't much information out there on either the RRS foot and the Kirk collar. Take it easy...

Blog hits aside...I really don't see the need for anything other than the factory foot on the 70-200 f2.8. Can't speak about the f4 since I've not seen one. Granted a replacement foot eliminates the need to put a plate on the bottom of the foot, and maybe just LOOKS better, but it's a lot more expensive that just the plate.
I just bought a VR2 (here on the B&S boards) to replace my VR1 and it came with a Kirk foot thrown in. I put it on my 1 and 2 and really can't see the advantage in stability. I actually like the original better. I'll be selling it with my VR1 soon.

Those add-on plates can come loose. I believe it's a bit safer to replace the foot with the kirk or RRS varieties.

Yeah, blog-bait is what it comes across as, regardless of the OP's stated intention.

For anyone else looking for a 70-200 foot, an alternative source is Hejnar Photo. Their 70-200 arca-compatible foot ($60) is almost half the price of the RRS foot ($100), and only $5 more than the RRS plate-only ($55) for that lens. The only disadvantage is that the Hejnar foot doesn't have a quick release, but for most people that's not an issue. In fact, the hex screw attachment method should theoretically make the foot more stable than the RRS foot.

The need is typically driving replacing the factory foot is the need/desire the have Arca-Swiss compatibility for the lens mount.

The choice of RRS is (for me) mainly driven by the removable foot, which allows my lens to take up a lot less space in my bag.

You'll be looking hard - the is no collar or foot standard with the f/4 (which is why I have the RRS 70-200 foot/collar setup).

I agree the need to have arca swiss compatability, I just use a plate. Not as elegant looking, but a lot cheaper.
I just saw a pic of the lens today.

I don't have enough room in my bag for the foot to stick out - it would scratch things. The foot on my 80-200 was low-profile enough to be (marginally) OK, but the newer lenses have big feet! Removable is a big plus for me.

It's appropriate that you should use that particular analogy, you should try it yourself. I'm not the rude American who chases people away from this forum like a junkyard dog, while trying to offset his bitchy tone with a slew of emoticons.

Actually there is, the Nikon RT-1, selling for $169 US. $10 US more than the Kirk, and no built-in quick release plate.
