Do you think it would make sense for nikon to release a 40mm pancake, either something close to canon's 40/2.8, or as a premium lens as 40/2 (5-600$ with voigtlander level optics)?

Or are nikon's rival lenses to good in the 35 1.8 and 50 1.8?

They used to have a 45mm pancake lens back in the film days and I loved it. It was a Guide Number lens. You could lock in your GN and then it was linked to the focus and would give accurate manual flash exposures. I loved it at weddings in the old days.

So, if I was still shooting Nikon, I think one would still be a viable product in today's market. I'm sure they would have no need to include the GN feature in this day and age though.

Regards,

Gary E

Nikon Nikkor GN 45mm f/2.8, hit ebay - sharp on FX bodies as you can see over in the manual focus glass thread on occasion.

The Nikkor 40 f2.8G Micro might be worth considering...none of the CA/distortion issues of the 35 f1.8G
Remarkable lil lens, compact enough to throw in your pocket...even excels on the D800, in 1.2 crop mode.

I'd rather just pack my Sig 35.

Yep, re-make the 45/2.8P into a 40/2. Unfortunately to make it a pancake they could not put an AF motor in it, thus they won't make it . . .

If they did, hopefully it would have better optics than the 40/2 Ultron (which is very good on DX, but not so much on FX).

My 45/2.8P is doing me fine on my D800 for now - little to complain about except the extreme far corners never quite getting sharp, but I'll take that in exchange for how small and light it is. It's become the default lens on my D800 because it's so unobtrusive.

Can nikon not do something similar to canon's stm due to technical limits? Pentax also has a 43 mm pancake.

I'd definitely want this to be an fx lens, I only mention the 35 1.8 because it seems kike it could eat a 40mm's sales.

Well, the 35/1.8 is a DX lens, so it wouldn't eat into a 40/2 FX pancake . . .

40MM? That would be one very thick pancake.

I would be interested in a 40mm pancake lens,
on the days when I just want to take my small shoulder bag out with a telephoto this pancake would fit right in without much room/or weight and still provide a normal/wide option.

I have the Canon 40mm pancake. I'm not too impressed by it, but that may be because I only have an APS-C Canon camera. If it were full frame, I might think differently. Still, even the form factor... it doesn't make the camera any particularly lighter or less bulky in a noticeable way for me. It still requires a neck sling or camera bag, and it does not not (obviously) make the camera pocketable. My point is: you still handle it the same way.

If it were an f/2 prime, and a bit wider (or if I were on FF), I might use it.

But Canon's rendition is a bit *too* cheap. AF is slow, noisy, etc.

I'd pay more ($200-400?) for something better.

I prefer the Nikon 35 f/1.8 on DX over the 40 f/2.8 on Canon... on APS-C. The 35 f/1.8 is just small enough, and just fast enough. Yeah the chroma is crazy sometimes, but that's not a show stopper.

Personally, I'd be more interested in small, thin, and slow-if-necessary 35, 28 or 20mm lenses.

I'd buy it, I love a cheap, ultra light lens to walk around with occasionally.

I'd buy it. Had the Ultron 40/2 for Canon FF and 20/1.7 for m4/3 and loved both lens. My ideal focal length is around 40mm. Shoot a lot with 35 and 50mm these days, but would prefer 40mm.

Henry, why would you quote cRockwell on this? It is one of those rarified instances he doesn't think it's "the greatest, bestest lens ever, ever!!".

Whatever.

I used Canon's 40mm pancake on a 5D for a few months and absolutely loved it. I would be interested if Nikon could achieve a similar AF lens.

Remember that focal length is measured to the sensor, not the mount, which is already 46mm away from the sensor.

With the proliferation of high quality mirror-less cameras, it looks like there are better solutions for going small these days. A pancake lens on an SLR is still a large camera, so I don’t know that they’re such attractive solutions anymore.

(Jemfinch, think "flapjack.")

Ok, if you say so.
