Was wanting to pick up a decent performing extender to use with my 400mm Takumar M42 mount, will be using it on NEX 7 as well as 1Ds.Are there any good performing extenders out there other than the Canon Mount AF ones.
It is a MF lens so i do not need AF.Any suggestions are always appreciated.
I've used a Leica-R APO 1.4x, which was superb, and a Mamiya 645 2x which decent but not quite as good as the Canon 2x II; but neither would help you mount an M42 lens. Your best bet is probably to stick with (AF compatible) Canon EF mount extenders (since it can be hard to find other options that play nice with M42) --- but one of the good quality third-party ones. I've seen various comparisons indicating that some of the Tamron and Tokina extenders can be better than the Canon "II" extender series; but you'll have to search around (or wait for better advice here) to figure out which of many variants is preferable.
The old manual focus Pentax Rear Converter A 1.4x-S and A 2X-S teleconverters are excellent, but not common. You can get an M42 adapter for the front of the TC, and it'll act just like an M42 teleconverter.
The "-S" stands for "short", which means the optics don;t stick out pasy the TC mount, as opposed to the "-L" versions.
Thanks to both of you for your replies.
I forgot to mention that i have what appears to be a sharp 2X Kalt Teleconverter for Minolta Mount. From my research there does not appear to be any wany to mount a Canon or M42 lens/adapter to a rokkor mount. Is this so?

You can't achieve infinity focus with a Minolta lens (or TC) on an EOS camera, without having optics in the adapter, because the Minolta register (lens mount to sensor distance) is less than the EOS body; 43.5mm vs. 44mm. IOW, you'd have to insert the MD lens 0.5mm inside of the EOS body mount to get infinity focus. A quick search for "eos minolta adapter" on eBay will show you the typical offerings. The adapters with no optics are for macro work only, because the MFD is fairly close.
