Don - Update... Let me just say, 1/60s handheld at 500mm, incredible. One followed me home today, so I guess I have to keep it

Darn you Colin. As soon as I start waning from my IR conversion crave, you post something like this!

Very nice and love the colors in your "blue hour" London shots too.

Nice! I really like the other you posted over in MF thread too.

200-500 is great. Only test shots so far. I did give it a test with my LensCal card and focus is spot on. No camera adjustment needed.

200-500mm VR is a fantastic lens. I know I am going to get one soon, but this year I've blown my lens budget early on

That's awesome George! The one I tested was spot on too with no fine tuning needed. I kinda wish I would've bought that one. Maybe next year

I keep seeing 200-500mm offers on the Buy and Sell, but I won't buy this lens used untested. Too many stories of sharpness issues, not just lack of AF accuracy. It probably affects only a small percentage, but when something is sold off after just a few months you wonder if that's not the reason. The one I rented last year was superb and I won't settle for anything less when I get mine.

In bright light on the D500 AF of the rental was nearly as good as the 400mm f/2.8. The VR on it is great, far better than the Tokina 70-200 G2 I rented this August. Even at list price, the 200-500mm is a bargain. I do have to sell my 600mm f/4 to get one, though. Hard to say goodbye to the big old gun, but it would never get me shots like the one below. The zoom and the compact size make it a great walk-around super telephoto, that can quickly go wider to grab some not so far away moments. I think I'd have more use for this than a 70-200mm in my shooting.

Woah - that's cool

View of St. Paul's Cathedral from the Tate Modern.
Taken through glass so acuity compromised a bit.
You used to be able to get out onto a balcony but they have moved things around since I was last there.

Got bored of true color processing here and monochrome just didn't look great either, but combined with a graded twist came out alright

400mm f/2.8 G on D600, no teleconverter, but slight crop

Still getting used to shooting AF glass again. I really like the handling of the 200-500. Nothing special over the weekend, but was just messing around the back yard shooting hummers, squirrels etc. Just getting a feel for the lens at various focal lengths. I am very pleased. Even on the relative slow autofocus of the Df.

Below shot handheld, AF-C d9, 1/125 @ f/5.6, 100% crop to show detail.

I thought I had taken a wide angled pano with the 16mm fish but exif shows this to be at the wide end of my 16-85 VR.
I attempted some false colour but couldn't get to where I wanted the picture to go.
In the end I moved a few LR sliders around to get this.

During the blue hour huh?

I do like it though.

I never have been able to pull off a good false color IR shot. With or without taking a custom white balance shot first. But again, I have only been using an IR filter on the lens.

The D7100 is known to be very tricky to accept a WB preset with a 720nm filter.
I managed one (using 50W halogen lamp) but it is still a bit off compared to the D80.
I need to persevere and try to WB against some other sources. Sunlit grass just doesn't work.

At the last race, I rented/tested the Tamron 70-200mm VR G2 - nice lens if stationary subject are your thing, or even high shutter speed moving targets. Colors and sharpness are absolutely top notch, has the same micro contrast you get from a top of the line Nikon, and the backgrounds at f/2.8 are perfect, all at $1400. But it has a problem in my use case - I need VR that can be used for panning at slow shutter speeds, and even though it claims to have a mode explicitly made for panning, it utterly failed that test - I have no idea what it is supposed to do, but I got better pans with it when all VR was turned off. Really a bummer, because apart from that, the lens produces some great images. Too expensive if I can't use it on the track for what these things are mostly used.
