now why oh why did I buy that MF 600mm

I only have two AF lenses, and they barely ever get used.

from the 24-85mm VR, my "drive around" lens

Nice idea Dean.

My debut is from last field trip:

Gray Monjita feeding on a cockroach

D7000 + TC20EIII + Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 G AF-S (= 600mm f/5.6) + BusHawk stock mount, ISO 250, f/9 at 1/400s ~ 35% crop.
With a D7000 this combo is an effective 900mm, so VR on and bursts of 3-5 shots / seconds are a must.
Surely not impossible with a MF lens, but the task becomes easier with AF when shooting very active guys like this one.

Peter, these guys are smart enough (after hundreds of thousands years of evolution) to kill these large prey before eating them;
in this case the "armoured" and harder to swallow parts are removed before swallowing:

Gray Monjita feeding upon a cockroach - sequence by labecoaves, on Flickr

D7000 + TC20EIII + Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 G AF-S (= 600mm f/5.6) + BusHawk stock mount, ISO 250, f/9 at 1/320 to 400s ~ 30-35% crop.

Top: the cockroach is still intact with the "armoured" head and thorax;

Middle: beating up the prey in the ground to kill it and remove harder parts;

Bottom: the cockroach now is without the armoured head/thorax, just the succulent abdomen which is ready to be swallowed.

Just 2 minutes after lunching the cockroach:

D7000 + TC20EIII + Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 G AF-S (= 600mm f/5.6) + BusHawk stock mount, ISO 250, f/10 at 1/640s ~ 30% crop.

I'm not sure it would be fair if the usual group of suspects had the TWO most busy threads on the Nikon forum, but who knows where this will lead.

I'll run out of AF images VERY soon but I'll keep playing until I do. When I bought the D700 three years ago I had to scramble to buy lenses and decided since I still owned a dozen Canon lenses and a 5D that this experiment called for good, not great Nikon lenses I could buy without breaking the bank. Sue splurged and bought a 28-70 f/2.8 AF-s. I bought an 85 f/1.8D, a 35 f/2D, and 18-35 f/3.5-4.5D and a 70-210 f/4.5-5.6D. The 85 f/1.8 was sold after I bought the Cream Machine, the f/1.4D I still own. The 35 f/2D was sold after my MF adventure began picking up steam. But I took AF lenses with me the summer of 2010 for visit with family. And we went to a baseball game where I put the 70-210 to work. Here are a couple of shots from that game at the Minnesota Twins new baseball park.

And one shot with the 18-35.

Shooting manual focus has spoiled me forever, I'm afraid. I appreciate the benefits of an AF lens in some situations, but turning the focusing ring of an MF Nikkor, as I've said often, is like a religious experience to me. Shooting AF feels almost dismissive of the whole enterprise... but that is a very personal sentiment. I'll keep coming back and playing here, but not likely with new material...

Jose, excellent wildlife-captures!

Peter, very nice work with the drive-around-lens ;-)

Chin, the 14-24/2.8 is without equivalent in the MF-Nikkor-world (my opinion, not written in stone). Fantastic work!

Curtis, I like your "old material" a lot.

Here's some "fresh material", taken a few days ago, all with D3s and 200/2VR with or without TC-17E:

I was 100 percent sure he will knock my lights out

I like your "old" material as well Georg...

My guess is these gentlemen will have long, healthy lives, given the kind of exercise in which they engage. Great to see. AND, of course, having the 200 f/2 in your kit is every sports shooters dream. I would have loved to have a faster lens when I was shooting baseball. f/5.6 just doesn't cut it... But we work with what we have...

I remembered that I used two of my three AF lenses at a friend's wedding... Here is a shot of the table before the reception began taken with the 50 f/1.8 AF lens... the first version... as close to MF as I could get...

I'll keep digging.

The possibilities are ENDLESS...

How about out of focus photos taken with an AF lens... HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?

I think there was an extension tube involved in that shot... there's NO infinity there...

Chris you can't just drop it there... who is this young beauty? Have you become a father, a god-father, an uncle? Inquiring minds want to know...
