p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma SD1 Merrill - first photographs and a review!

Hello everyone,

finally my SD1 Merrill and a few lenses got delivered, and I brought them with me to Mantua, Italy for a first test. I am enjoying very much the camera and lenses so far, and will do some more controlled tests on the camera and lenses soon; I can say that while it is indeed a great camera for a certain type of photography and photographers, it is definitely not an "Universal Shooter" by any means...

Here a couple of images from that outing:

You can see more photographs HERE, (all the Mantua images in this gallery have been taken with the SD1 Merrill); as well, I published an article reviewing the SD1 Merrill on my blog, with more pictures, HERE.

Best,

Vieri

Good read Vieri! Thanks a lot! Nice set of lenses you bought with it as well.
I am particulary interested how well the SD1 does with 35/1.4.
I will follow your blog to find out.

When I first got my DP1 Merrill, I started thinking about selling all of my gear and getting one of these cameras. Ultimately it was too scary of an idea for me to follow through with it. The main problem for my work is how terrible the fovean sensor is at capturing sunbursts and dealing with flare, so if I am planning a sunrise sunbrust shot I don't dare use it.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed! I am doing some more controlled tests, and I hope I'll be able to post results in the next few days - comparing the 35 on the SD1 vs the 50 Nikkor on the D800E, that sort of thing... should be interesting!

Best,

Vieri

Hello Andy,

I hear you - I have a ton of Nikon stuff, with which I am generally pretty happy; so it took me quite an effort to go for it and add basically a duplicate Sigma system to my Nikon (I had to sell a lot of prints to do it, too!). I will test it thoroughly and then decide what to do - keep them both (tough, but maybe justifiable) or keep the Sigma for landscape / fine art and the Nikon (paired down) for other work... we'll see. Anyway, it's a very interesting shooting machine and system!

Best,

Vieri
