The 14-24 is the best wide angle I have ever owned -- to say otherwise, had to be someone who has no experience with the lens.

There is no such thing anymore, you might as well forget it. And that would be a pretty silly thing to downgrade the 14-24mm on since to my knowledge none of the AF Nikon Lenses do that.

A lot of the D lenses have infinity stops but they aren't in the same league as the 14-24.

On the d800 does the 14-24 focus at a hard-stop infinity? How easy is it to set it and forget it? (I do realize that wide angles aren't too finicky this way, nevertheless, still like a hard-stop infinity)

Not on this lens. And, with my experimenting the point of perfect focus varies between f/stops...

Here's my absolute perfect focus at f/2.8 on the 14-24 @ 14mm (D800e). I did many test focuses at various targets at >10 feet away using live view contrast detect. Always goes to here.

Now that I know, it makes things really easy.

However, at f/11-f/13, the sharpest moves even further right.

I used the D800 and 14-24 combo in Namibia and I loved it!

Here are a few pics.

I find it to be a phenomenal lens at every FL on the D800e. However I do almost exclusively focus manually in LV. Typically I find you need to ensure focus is sharp on the edges and the rest takes care of itself for a max DOF landscape. I find the AF inaccurate when I've tried focussing on a near subject for shallow DOF, say, but am told it's 'within spec'. It really is a fabulous lens though.

I was not so impressed at my 14-24 on my D800e but after AF adjust (15 points) it's superb. As others have mentioned, using LV is a great way to be sure of perfect focus but anyway, I just wanted to add that it's a great combination.

I shoot real estate interiors almost daily and have no problems with the lens and the D800.

That was pretty much what was going thru my brain as well when I saw those!

I would comment that the 14-24 was the first lens that I had to micro adjust to the point where it was nite/day different before and after, this was on a D800.

I was astonished at the improvement once correctly calibrated - and I'd assumed that with the FL it would be less of an issue.
