p.1 #1 · D800 issues with the 14-24 mm

Hi everyone,

I'm really interested to buy the D800 but I've read some turn off on the web about how the D800 and 14-24mm wasn't a good match in terms of image quality (sharpness) and auto focus.

I haven't made my decision yet but I'm curious to read what you have to say on this. Or If you want to post some of your photos, go ahead!

Thanks

Wow, news to me - it's great on my D800. Crisp, sharp, my favorite landscape lens.

where did you read that the 14-24 wasn't good on the D800? I love my 14-24 for ultra wide stuff on my d800s, and there are tons of great examples like the ones Steve posted up (I'm diggin' #1 BTW)

DxoMark lists it as the best ultra wide zoom for the D800 http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Publications/DxOMark-Reviews/Which-lenses-for-your-Nikon-D800/The-Nikon-D800-and-wide-angle-lenses

On the d800 does the 14-24 focus at a hard-stop infinity? How easy is it to set it and forget it? (I do realize that wide angles aren't too finicky this way, nevertheless, still like a hard-stop infinity)

I assume the OP is referring to the well-documented "left-AF" issue, which seems to be more pronounced with the 14-24 than with other lenses.

If you have a camera that doesn't exhibit this AF problem (or just avoid using the left-most AF point), the results with the 14-24 can be quite spectacular.

Thanks for the kind words everyone

Sharpbokeh - here's a couple quick 100% crops from the second shot above. This was with a polarizer on the lens! (I use the Fotodiox adapter system) - I'm pretty happy with the sharpness. Center is sharp, and you can see the edges fare pretty well too. I wouldn't be afraid to print this large. There's always a few lenses / people with poor technique that can skew to curve on these things. Most people get these kinds of results, not what you see in the links you posted.

Steve, those photos are simply amazing. My 14-24 is my sharpest lens on the D800E. Nothing else comes very close.

those seem to be individual cases. I haven't found those to be the norm, that first thread seems like there is a problem with the camera or lens, it doesn't look like a typical soft lens, or missed focus, it almost looks like someone put petroleum jelly on the lens or something, but whatever it is, its not normal. My experience with it has been very good, very sharp high IQ.

I don't know if I have any shots with me at the moment to share, but I can grab some if you'd like, I recently had the 14-24 and 800E with me down in monument valley/four corners area, I'll see if I can grab some images from that trip.

I could be missing one, but I do not believe any of Nikon's AF lenses have a hard infinity stop. They can all focus past infinity. I believe you'd have to use an older MF lens to obtain a hard stop at infinity.

Most lenses don't hard stop at infinity, but actually go beyond. This is because of manufacturing tolerances for one. Also, materials used in lenses actually change size with temperature. Infinity at 40F will probably be a bit different at 80F.

Infinity is also different if you are using infrared film or doing infrared photography digitally.

Horrible examples of what the lens can do, please post some barn doors and brick walls
