I'd like to see some pictures taken with medium format gear, either with film or digital back.

I've searched the forum, and I could not find one....
If there is one that I couldn't find, I'll remove the thread.

As a novice in medium format, I'd like to see and learn few tricks that you are willing to share...

I'll begin with one taken with Alpa SWA, 35XL, and P25+..... hand-held....

I'd love to shoot film, but it's getting more and more expensive....
Film definitely has that look that digital can't express...

You are shooting with a technical camera and a digital back and you think film is too expensive...?

I had to get rid of most of my gear, which took me almost 10 years to gather, to set up the Alpa system....
I'm a gearhead for sure, but definitely not a rich guy....

I'd love to be able to afford $20 to $30 a roll every week...
Maybe I should quit smoking....

Was it worth it? I mean P25+.

Way out of my league, I dont think I would even get loan that big. Tho Im sure in long term its much cheaper than shooting film as almost any digital today.

I guess DMR went away too?

Wow. I pay $20 to $30 for pro packs (5 rolls). Where are you shopping for yours?

It's easy - just don't shoot film exclusively. I shoot a couple rolls a month at the most. Can you buy a film back for your Alpa? And definitely quit smoking!

If you pay for shipping to get the film, shipping to develop and cost to develop. I would guess it is minimum $15 for me if I get a bunch of rolls shipped together. Obviously doing BW at home brings that down, but some like slide film still

For Portra 400 120, B&H has them for $26.95 each. That's where I get mine now.

You might also consider developing your own film. It ain't rocket science.

Black and white film is a great way to go for medium format.
Not limited to small capture area of "small" medium format sensors.

MF used to be a bigger spread of capture sizes. 645 being the smallest.

Better dynamic range with black and white film, especially if using water bath processing.

Black Volcanic rock and white spray.

Kodak Plus X pan and Fuji gx680 80mm

For Digital landscape I prefer the D800 to digital MF Digital. More dynamic range and better shadow detail.

Here is an example of recovery.

Before recovery:

I exposed for the extreme highlights

Recovered shadows

Moonlight hand held. High ISO and optical image stabalization

While I still shoot MF film the D800 has replaced my MF digital.

Here is an 8x10 film portrait.

I have been reading older discussions on the pros and cons of film vs. digital for medium format. Usually I find older discussions that are not up do date. Does anyone know of a good recent discussion or treatment that goes beyond the resolution theme?
