p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A best buy?

Once in a while there is a “best buy” camera and lens combo out there. I believe I have found one of the all-time best.
The Canon 1D Mk III matched up with the new Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM lens.
A really nice, excellent condition 1D3 can be had for $1100, give or take a few bucks. The Siggy is $799 brand new with case and the best ever hood. So for less than two large, you have an outfit that will take a back seat to very few and they will probably cost several times what this rig does.

I dunno, the 6d 24-105 kit is pretty capable also.

As much as I like my 1DMK3 it is an older camera has a poor LCD and is larger and bulky Also, the 10 MP files are small and have issues if you print larger images. The AF is good but has been surpassed in a substantial way by later cameras. But, the camera does provide good value, if you can live with the limitations.

Yeah, I don't know about that...

Right now a 1d3 would be pretty low on my list of image quality for value cameras. I'd take a 5D years before it, even at the same price... except that a 5D is half the cost of a 1d3. A 5D2 or 6D would be even better for not much more.

Now, if you need AF for sports, but IQ and enlargement isn't your goal... then a 1d3 makes a little more sense. Of course, if you're basing this on shooting a 35mm f/1.4... then sports ready AF isn't your top priority. For that lens I'd want FF. And on a budget there's literally nothing that touches a good old 5D.

Used T2i or T3i (or 60D or 7D) with 18-55 and 55-250 kit lenses (and sigma 30 1.4 if you can swing it).

Used 5DII and 24-105 (or 50 1.4 etc.)

I only owned a 1DIII very briefly, but it was a very nice camera. I currently shoot youth sports with a 1DII, which I find serves my purposes better than the much more expensive (though more modern and versatile) 7d. While folks may disagree, I have a higher keeper rate with lower noise with the 1DII (in daylight sports) than I did with the 7d for any reasonable sized prints. I'd guess the 1DIII is at least similar.

The Sigma is 899, not 799.

I agree with others. There are much better combos out there.

I've been very happy with my recent kit of 5Dc + 35 f/2 non IS. light, small, sharp.

I would argue that the 1D3 is a totally different camera than the 5D (I or II). Someone who purchases a 1D3 is going to have vastly different needs than someone picking up a 5D. I prefer my 1D3 for journalism work in every single way. I use my 5D2 for vacation and portrait sessions - and when I need two bodies, journalism/events.

The 5D cameras are unsurpassed in sensor quality but leave much to be desired in ever other aspect. While the 1D3 has a poor screen on the back, those who are purchasing 1D3s couldn't give less of a crap about the screen - they are buying a performance machine that will perform in every condition and do so well. All for an excellent price. I agree with the OP - this would make an excellent camera body for many people, far better than the 7D and 5D I and II for many situations.

5DC and the 40mm 2.8 seems like it would be pretty good value. But again, different strokes for different folks. I never really got along with the 1.3x sensor.

I have a 1DIII and in good light, I would choose it over my 6D for a lot of situations.

I sure as heck wouldn't let it go for $1100.

If I had to start over with some limited budge (but still enough), I'd probably have just gone with 6D with 24-105L or 35L.

My best buy was a 5D with Samyang 85mm f/1.4. By extension i would say that a 5D with a 35mm f/2, 40mm pancake or 50mm f/1.4 would be pretty damn good value.

I used to own the EF 35/2 and really did not like it. The manual focus barrel was cheap with zero smoothness or accuracy. The AF was noisy and slow. My oft used EF 24/2.8 seemed to perform better across the board. I sold the 35...

6D + 24-105L did it for me. I don't do sports/BIF/PIF, so I didn't feel the need for higher frame rates; it was the much better dynamic range and far lower (and less obtrusive) noise, coming from a 60D.

The kit lens is also a nice surprise; it's shorter than my 15-85 on the 60D, but still very sharp and reasonably ergonomic; and cheap as hell when bought with the kit. I quickly decided to keep it instead of trying to sell it and move to a faster 24-70. If I need a faster wide-angle, I have the 24/2.8 IS and 40/2.8 STM, both of which make great walk-around lenses.

If I had to add anything to the 6D kit, it'd be a telezoom of some sort, but I'm still torn on that one and putting up with my 70-300 IS USM. Wonderful lens at it's wide end, but weak on the tele end. I can't see finding a replacement for it outside of the L version or the 100-400L.

I've had the 24-105 twice and sold it twice.. I just bought a 5d3 kit with the 24-105 and sold it before I even took it out of the box. When the new owner pulled it out, it had the new pinch cap and a 'B' date code. I almost wanted to keep it due to new lens lust!
