I don't think anyone's suggesting you made a bad choice for yourself.

The OP said he can spend a thousand bucks. 'monkey (and I'm saying the same thing for that matter) is just pointing out that, given the budget, the most optimally performing lens he can get is the 300mm prime.

If OP said he had a budget half that big, the Tamron/Nikkor 70-300 zooms would probably top the list

'muckster compared to the 300 f2.8 VR's the $900 +/- 300 f4 may well be deemed pedestrian
