I received my Canon lens adapter today. It seemed to work fine with my 100mm f/2.8L macro lens, so I thought I'd try it tonight with my 400mm f/5.6L and shoot the moon.

I set to manual exposure and decided to start at ISO 400, 1/1000th sec, f/6.3, autofocus. Bingo! Nearly perfect exposure, and AF actually grabbed this shot. First shot! Handheld!

The moon was relatively low to the horizon and I had to cut through a lot of atmosphere. So, the overall sharpness was no doubt affected negatively somewhat by that.

For a handheldshot impressive! Concratulation for the picture.
May I ask, how much, did you need to crop?

Enjoy your 400L 5.6, it's an excellent lens.

My copy has the age of 20 and still satisfying
Some days ago ,putted the 400 L 5.6 on a tripod and played with the AF,
on daylight, bright day
400mm with no TC, AF working (F 5.6)
400mm with TC 1.4III, AF working (F 8)
400mm with TC 2xIII, AF working (F 11)
400mm with TC 2xIII and other 2x expander, AF still working!!
The last combination has an entry F of 22!!

There is a very powerfull AF, in this little body...

@cameron12x, perhaps I should send you my modest moonfiles with the kind ask, for processing, not used to moon shots.

Tried to get the full moon a couple of days ago, also not have a friendly atmosphere

no crops, little processed, tripod shots, self timered.

@oldgear: nice images!

My images are 100% full image crops within the resolution limits imposed by the site.

I will have to try focusing the 400 f/5.6L with the 1.4x II in bright light and see if it can focus at f/8 with the little EOS-M. What a great little body she is!

Nice shots in this thread! The M is really growing on me and many of Canon's design decisions are starting to make sense. It has had one unintended consequence ... I have an overwhelming urge to use the LCD screen on my 5D III as a touch screen!

Excellent images everyone. I'd like to share a few from the past couple days.

So you're saying that, this could be the first 1.6 crop sensor Canon body that'll autofocus accurately, without taping any pins, at f/8?? I might have to re-think my decision not to get the lens adaptor for my EOS-M....

I don't have any 2X converters to try this one, but I believe any of the Canon APS-C sensors will AF at f/8 in liveview.

I have the 1.4X and only compatible lenses 70-200 f/4 L USM and 135 f/2 L autofocus with the 1.4X are f/5.6 or less so no tricks are needed..

I could be wrong though so don't take it to the bank...

Yea, you might be right on that...I guess the difference would be that the EOS-M is designed to be, more or less, only used in live mode, so it might be easier to use this combo for real world stuff, especially with the autofocus improvements.

Again, I'm not sure either, but it does seem like there are some interesting options worth checking out...think people would look at me weird at a racetrack if I was trying to use a 400mm DO with a 2xTC and an EOS-M?

Lots o' happy people on this thread.
Seems like people are pleased with the firmware update for the auto focus?
Does the relatively large auto focus box in live view seem limiting?

I think a lot has to do with the price coming down from $800 to $300. Makes this camera on par with PS prices.

The new firmware is a big improvement.

I would love to have the AF boxes smaller. I can live with them at the current size though.

I think the biggest thing is knowing what the camera can and can't do. If you have the expectations of DSLR AF for quick moving action you will be disappointed. Of course this camera (like any) is not for everybody

I really like this little camera, at the sale price it is/was a steal. Took my M to a car show and shot the 22mm at f2 all day. (I'll have a few more car images coming)

The very first video I shot with the camera and the 18-55. I Could have used more reach (or better seats), most of the clip was shot at 55mm. Looks quite good. Edit: I guess the video code from flickr won't embed here.

This is the link for it if you want to see.

Jim, thankyou, but everyones shot is beautifull and a joy to admire.

The moonshots where rather easy, just wait for full moon and clouds.

I rate the 'like' for every image pleasing me, so far, all image I have the priviledge to see, got the 'like'...

This thread is rich and extraordinary.

The TO had a verrry good idea, to start this thread!

fotografur wrote:

You are very right. This little body demands a deeper/higher learning couve, higher than a usual dslr.
Something between dead easy and sometimes hard to tame..

I guess, and that makes me *happy* in a way,

dgdg wrote:

Deal with The to be taken image can bee zoomed, that helps a little
othersides, the use of 'face detection', even for non human objects, turn into a adaptive in size focus box.
Only in modest way, but this can help

Well, in liveView mode offered for example in the 5ds or 7ds runs well for 'above 5.6' lens combination.
with F22 (F5.6 from the bare lens + 2x converter plus another 2x converter)
I was never able, to aquire AF by lifeview.

Just a set of testshots, please 'include' those shots have been made on a hot day, over the water,
air turbulences are very well degrading the images, anyway, only AF testshots.
Sitting in my country, the river is the boarder, the other side is france.
A few french people enjoyed the public beach life,

used lens, the EF 400L. 5.6

the bare lens, native F 5.6
Single flexi AF was set

400mm

AF yes

800mm
the 2xIII extender used (total F11 open)

AF yes
slower than with the bare lens but still 'usable'

1600mm (total of F22 open)
the 2xIII extender used plus a oem, lowcost 2x converter added

AF yes
even more slow, but could find a target and complete the job

Not very sharp due the cirtumstances, but just for giving an idea...
(at home, viewing the image in 'big', I can read the title of the newspaper 'l'alsace', read the wetherforcast for Europe, there is a picture and something written about the leader from the tour the france.

Perhaps, on an image friendly day, it could be possible to read more,
from the newspaper, located in an other country...
the money saved can be putted to glass)
