Whoa!! It's been 4 days since last post! Well I actually took the M to work with me today, after I picked up the 18-55IS off of Amazon(used) for just over $100! Nice little lens, and actually quite sharp, too. there have been some recent posts using the lens, so I thought I would jump, too! Gregg

Welcome to the (happy) 18-55IS users. You will see, a great addition to the 22 f2 and still a compact overall size.

Before they close due end of season, I went to the park of birds, visiting old friends.

Took the 5dIII AND the M with, used both bodies.

Quite right oldgear! So far, the lens seems to be really nice! And I think you're right to say it's a great compliment to the 22. It's also, by far, the slowest lens I own! But, it makes me readjust my eye for composure, making think about DOF, and getting a decent all in focus shot!!
And the IS is fantastic and really helps with the whole POS factor of the M!

How would the EOS-M be in the hands of an 18-yr old girl with no real photography background? Say left in P mode, shooting jpg's with the 22mm or the 18-55 zoom?

My daughter is going to Europe for 2 weeks in the spring, and I want to get her a camera worthy of the trip. Otherwise she'll be using an iPhone. I'm sure once she gets back, she'll likely not pick it up again, so I want something I'll be happy with too.

I was thinking Panasonic LX7, Canon S120, Sony RX100. But after a bit more research and this thread, the M looks like a great option, and likely cheaper than all but the LX7.

Panasonic LX7, Canon S120, Sony RX100 are very good options. A friend's 18-yr old daughter makes good use of her fathers RX100. For a cheaper option I would also suggest the S110 (I bought it for my parents) if it is only for one trip.
I really like the M and it could be used as easily as the others in P or A+ mode but it is not as pocketable. As your daughter would probably not worry about the better IQ of the M, she would be happier with a smaller camera and whatever choice you do, you will get a nice second camera when she is back.

Thanks Claude. I'm off to a local weekend sale with her now, and we'll see what she likes. My initial plan was the LX7 (I can get it for $279 this weekend).

Really?
I shoot Canon for 99% of my work, but when I want to shoot on the street or go light, I'll take my x100 any day. Now if Canon would put a viewfinder in one of these, I'd consider a switch. You can get just as good images with your X100!

cheers,
bruce

but the x100 is twice the price
