It was special to witness the acrobatic Swallow-tailed Kites with their long narrow wings, their striking black / white plumage and their scissor-like tail.

They soar and glide in the air with relatively few and seemingly effortless wing beats.

C/C appreciated

They are beautiful birds and you got some nice detail in the second. Now, I struggle with this big time, but there is an obvious white balance difference in the two shots. I'll assume these were not shot on two very different days so one is more accurate...the 2nd perhaps. Maybe re-visit that part of the processing. I j
I Have problems with this all the time so I get it..can't fix it but do get it!

I agree with Eric on the color balance, but the shots are nice ~ Ron

I like the close up one very much. Sharp and nice feather details.

Hi Eric,

Typically when I am lucky enough to see these buoyant beauties (only a handful of times ever) I am fighting harsher light and blown out whites on the region around the head. Fortunately these guys came floating by around 8:30 AM.

The area around the head still had highlight issues and in the process of dealing with that I'm sure the white balance changed. It is probably a bit white in the second image.

I see what you mean and thanks for your comments.

Best,
Tom

Hi Harsha,

Thanks! I was hoping to get a couple of decent pics of these guys in order to share with our FMers. They appeared out of nowhere and left just as fast. These are certainly some magnificent birds.

Best,
Tom

Would love to get a chance to photograph kites. Nice find Tom. Too bad you didn't get more time with them.

Swallow Tail Kites are some of my favorite birds to photograph. As you stated, they rarely flap there wings. Making it difficult to get photographs of the back of these beautiful birds, which is completely black except for the head.

Great shots!

I hope some Swallow-tailed Kites fly right over you one day.

Yeah, they kind of flew right in and flew right out. They appeared to be hunting for food.

Best,
Tom

Thanks a lot Birdie. Perhaps some more will venture over one day. Who knows?

How true, how true, how true! I have no pictures of their backs.

Their 'flip-and-turn' move is nothing less than sensational when they are capturing insects in mid-air! You have to be quick to capture it. I haven't seen that many SWKIs and haven't been quick enough thusfar.

Best,
Tom
