So June is here and even up in the chilly northern climes of Norway we have 25C on a regular basis, so i've chosen to act on Edd's prompting and take the initiative on this year's summer thread. I guess we all know the rules - summer themed photos with a emphasis on the Canon Gear(s) used. So please remember to mention the kit you used and boast about how well you used it

And a new rule for this year - Peter is only allowed to post shots taken at 100mm and below

Ok, i'm kidding about that last....

So to get things moving, a reminder of why we have summer, with a 5D, a 70-200mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4 and a Samyang 85mm f/1.4:

Summer is for flowers....

...for bubbles....

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2868/8903770730_eac316ae59_o.jpg

...and for bicycles.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2838/8903770524_87d7d74a5a_o.jpg

Most of all though, summer is for getting out and having adventures:

Have a great summer everyone.

Good idea, 15Bit. We have also gone thru a very brief and half-arsed spring, and now there is genuine summer heat and humidity.
I have pulled some antiquated gears out of the closet this morning.

Leica M9 with Canon 50mm f/1.4 thread mount lens from the 1950s. Perhaps cheating a bit, but it's still Canon glass!

Thanks. The Canon 50/1.4 is actually quite good. Not super sharp wide open, but holds its own against the contemporary Leica and Nikon lenses.

If I may, here's a comparison of the three below - Canon 50/1.4, Nikkor 5cm/1.4 and Leica Summarit 5cm/1.5 - You'll note the Nikkor has very strong/busy background rendering. Wide open it's also very prone to spherical aberration glow around high contrast transitions, but at f/2 it's like a different lens with the glow gone and quite high global contrast. The Leica is very low in contrast, but a few tweaks in post bring it back nicely. All three are quite susceptible to flare from direct specular light on the front element, or veiling flare from bright backgrounds. Of the three, the Canon is probably the most controlled, offering a good balance of sharpness, contrast and most neutral background rendering.

These lenses are now finding renewed life on mirrorless cameras, and obviously can also be used on current Leicas with a thread to M-mount adapter. Unfortunately the only full frame solution is currently from Leica.

Apologies these qualify more as spring-time subject matter.

The exact same LR processing settings were used for all three, including a very slight curve tweak. Order of appearance is Canon, Nikon, Leica. All were wide open:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmm9/20130509/20130509_0006.jpg

and this is the Leica with contrast, curves, clarity and slight WB adjustment to get it looking a bit more like the other two:

A few more of these 3-way comparisons are posted here.

This is a shot of the Mighty Martin Mars "Hawaii Mars" water bomber dropping a wet blanket as a demonstration to Holland America passengers on the cruise ship "Amsterdam".

The Amsterdam was leaving the Alberni inlet on it's way to Vancouver, BC.

Couldn't get any eye popping colors, but captured the majesty of this amazing former troop and equipment aircraft converted into an awesome fire fighting machine.

This probably belongs to the spring thread, because by early June all those crabapple flowers are gone.

Thanks Mark, Peter. Junior is something of a godsend photographically speaking - naturally photogenic, she makes me look like a much better photographer than i really am.

I'd like for that to be amended to stipulate "and no birds!" as well...
(And I'm only about 30% kidding.)

I have done bird shots even at 8mm FL, let alone 100mm.

SoCal shooter thus does protest, such madness be not spoken pleeze
I can testify to this non-long-white shooting, Peter with 15mm fishy in hand has BIFed, although the pijuns in question did look like they were about to attack

CA BIFing must continue, without ridicule...even in summer...really people, there be commons and honkers to image

Somebody had to post a dog picture. Unfortunately it's not my dog, for this particular trip to the dog park mine decided lamely that the leash was better.
