I find the 600 more difficult to rotate than my copy of the 400.

From my understanding based on some research into this a few years ago on the Sportsshooter.com forum, there are two versions of the 400 IS v.1 tripod collar. It seems, IIRC, the earlier version, until maybe around 2005, which I have, has a design based on ball bearings supporting the rotation while the newer version uses some kind of low-friction pads (which is also what's used by the 600). If you have the BB version and it's tight, you might want to take off the lens ID

Thanks Ron, my 600 is a UN date code and my 400 is a UR date code, I think, but it may be older. I'll check out the ball bearings on the 400 tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

Is this the new sport version of the Sigma or the superseded model?

DoF of the Sigma looks less at @420mm than Canon does at 400mm, but more than that tiny increase in magnification would yield.

Andrewsk, which Sigma 120-300 do you have, the OS model or non-OS?

UR is 2003. Mine is US... I found that SS thread and I might have mixed up the details.

http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=26905

One of the guys there had a UR lens and it had the BB-less collar design, which in hindsight kind of makes sense because IIRC, when the lens first came out, a lot of people complained about how difficult it was to rotate. If you have the BB-less design, I guess you could have Canon replace it with the newer style, though it will cost $500-600. Or keep your left hand under the front of the lens lifting it slightly to help rotation.

There's also a follow up thread to the one above: http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=26999

I would be more interested in if it is the new S (sport line) lens or not.

If the Sigma is focused correctly in the cute dig image there is a significant advantage to the 200-400..apart from an extra 260mm at the long end...
Thanks for posting!

Yes but many other differences that in the end probably will affect the image or IQ. The new lens comes with these customized options.
Autofocus Motor Speed
Microfocus Adjustments
Focus Limiter Setting
Lens Firmware Updates
Optical Stabilizer Customization
Multiple Custom Settings

All of which point to the new siggy being able to get even closer to the super canon .
But hey I picked up my siggy OS a while back for a tenth of the cost of the canon . I will never be in a position to own the canon but the fact that the siggy gets even a bit close makes me a very happy chappie

Still interested in the new siggy but in truth I doubt I could justify the extra cost

If you wait I think the price will go down. Look at the new Sigma 35/1,4 lens. It's already come down 10-20% from the start

Hi Ron,

I also owned a 400/2.8 IS with the UR date code, mine didn't have the ball bearing design.Mine got pretty tight to turn and I ordered the ball bearings that the Sportsshooter article referred to and when I disassembled it, much to my surprise, no ball bearings.More like a plastic bushing, which I ended up putting a small amount of white lithium grease on, which helped fo some time.

I looked up the compare tool on TheDigitalPicture.com and compared the old version Sigma 120-300 OS to the Canon 300 2.8 IS version I (which is what I currently have) and there is a noticeable difference in image quality between the two.
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=803&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=5&API=0&LensComp=249&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

I have been trying to decide if the new version of the Sigma would be worth exchanging my canon for. I still plan to wait for more test results but right now it doesn't look like I will make the trade . . .

Hope this is ok with rscheffler. Ill tag on and make this the official thread?

First up for me i am posting some comparisons between the CANON 200-400 and the SIGMA 12-300 with the TC attached.

Sorry that I do not have a CAT. The lovely tessa will fill in for one.

SIGMA is on the LEFT and CANON on the right. Here we are at F4, ISO 400 and 400mm for both. The detail in the CANON is already evident. Working on more now.

Keith

The canon does look way better in that comparison. I wonder if the sigma is a touch front focused though?? That can make a big difference, it looks like the Canon placed the focus just a trace deeper. Which version of the Sigma 120-300? (actually not that any of this really matter to me seeing how now way I can afford the 200-400 anyway at least not now).
