Hi All,
I'm posting some photos from UFC 159. It was my first time shooting mixed martial arts and it was a great experience once I got used to shooting through the cage. Comments are always welcome.

You can see the fence in almost all the shots, It's subtle, but I noticed it. But not much you can do with that.

You are correct. I was shooting with a 70-200 most of the night and depending on the fighters positions in the octagon it was impossible not to get the fence in the frame. To be honest shooting MMA is like nothing I have shot before.

Great shots and thanks for sharing, I'm a big MMA fan and always wondered if any FM members were credentialed to shoot UFC events. Esther Lin usually has some of the best shots from each event.

I'm a huge MMA fan as well so getting to shoot a sport I love made the experience so much better. I was lucky enough to work cage side next to Josh Hedges, who IMO is one of the best MMA shooters on the planet. He took the time throughout the event to give me some tips and pointers on how to improve which was very helpful.

So, are you shooting through the cage? If so, I am amazed that there is not some signs of the cage in the pictures. How do you do that?

Yes, I was shooting the through the cage with a 70-200 2.8 IS. They key is zooming far enough through the cage then making small movements left or right so that the camera doesn't lock focus back on the fence. I tried shooting with a 24-70 and 16-35 but both had the whole cage in the frame. It took a couple of rounds to get acclimated to it. But honestly I had a lot of out of focus images of the cage

Nice work.

Shots 2 and 9 would benefit from a tighter crop if you have enough pixels.

Really like #7.

@pzoos - Thanks for the positive comments they are appreciated. I'll be at the UFC in Boston next month and will post some shots after that event

I didn't realize that the UFC was coming to Boston. It may warrant a trip in. Great shots, I wish I could stand next to you there!

@boingyman I know what you mean! This was my first time shooting the UFC and I had to keep reminding myself I'm here to do a job and don't act like a fan. It almost got the better of me on the Friday before the fight when I was shooting the weigh ins and I turn around and Jon Jones and Joe Rogan are standing right beside. I bit my tongue and walked away. I wanted to ask for an autograph so bad but knew it wasn't the right time to do so.

Great shots. I have been given permission to shoot a smaller event in Los Angeles this Friday. Did you use a flash? This event will be outdoors, at stub hub center( formerly Home Depot)
