p.1 #1 · Circular polarizing filters

Hi,
Shopping for circular polarizers for a couple of my lenses. I notice the price range for these is really large. a Hoya 77mm is $120 and a Tiffen is $32. Whats the big difference? Anybody have the Tiffens and can speak well of them?
thanks

There are many threads and I'm sure you'll get better replies soon. But...

Overall, technically all filters will have some effect on image quality. The better brands affect it less. For polarizer, the light transmission (or blocking thereof) may not be even. Generally, the minimum acceptable brands are the multicoated Hoyas or that M brand I can't of the name, then the german companies are best but cost the most. Always go for multicoated

I guess the biggest thing is, how much do you care? I'm fine with the image quality loss in the cheap ones as I'm not a pro nor have the money for a nice or multiple nice circ-pol. I do plan on one day getting a large one with step-up rings.

Marumi tested as well as B+W, for half the price.

^^^^ on the basis of the lenstip testing, I use the Marumi Super DHG without regrets.

Klepto Kitty now has more filters stashed away than I have. I've been buying Marumi Super filters to replace the "lost" ones.

Marumi DHG, best one out there. And the whole circular thing is beyond me. I have two linear and one circular and I can swap them in and out and there's really no difference.

Actually, there is a difference. Modern cameras require a circular polarizing filter. Using a linear pol can cause big problems with focus and exposure. Trust me, the failure will occur on that one shot that is extremelly important. Such is Mr. Murphy's law.

Tiffen Digital HT. lets more light in by, at minimum, 3/4 of a stop in use while delivering the same PL results.
