p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · how to shoot an image with two focal points?

has any one been able to shoot an image with two focal points (selctive focus) on a dslr, in camera or in post? Jonas Peterson posted this shot: selective focus shot and I'm wracking my brain to how it's done. I've heard it can be done with a 645 camera by moving around the film back and plane but is it possible in PS or in camera/tilt shift (which I don't think). I'd love to know how this is done as I'm burning out trying to figure it out .lol

Ask him, He'd probably answer you. Looks like a T/S to me though.

tilt shift moves it flat (on angle angle) though doesn't it? This has two depths in focus meaning the lens would have to be warped to pull this off, or am I wrong?

This can be done with a tilt ( left to right ). I dunno if that was the technique used here.

I did send him an e-mail but was wondering if anyone here had done a simliar shot. I spent a few days trying to get it right and had no true success, even in composite, but I could be wasting a lot of time (which is fine) but would love to hear some success stories.

Could be any of those techniques or the old half of a close up filter trick.

You're wrong. Tilt-shift does two depths.

actually you're wrong.

Tilt shift (tilt specifically) just tilts the focal plane. It does not focus on two depths, but rather focuses on a line of focus moving diagonally away from the camera lens. Think of the focal plane (FP) as a sheet of paper hanging in parallel with the camera sensor. If you tilt the lens down, the FP will tilt accordingly. So the FP will be close to the camera near the bottom of the field of view, and far away from the camera near the top of the FOV (unless I have that backwards). And everything along that FP will be in focus.

could it be a composite of two t/s shots? Stitched together?

Not stiched. Two images focused on 2 different things would be layered over each other. Then you mask one layer and brush in to reveal the under layer.

Very likely a shifted shot, might also be a composite.

Either way it looks absolutely awful to me but maybe to others it is 'being creative'.

I was just trying to simplify. I'm sure the original poster got the point.
