p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Who is shooting FX and DX?

I haven't shot a DX camera since I bought the D3 years ago. Right now I'm using and D800E and love it, but have been seriously impressed with what I've read about the D7100 and am considering adding one to my camera bag for lots of reasons.

There are times where it would come in handy for me and the price is great.

I'm hoping to hear from anyone who may have done the same thing or may be considering it.

The D800E sets the bar so high that I hope the IQ is good. I tried a D7000 when it came out and was very impressed with the IQ.

I've considered the D3200, D7000 and D7100, and am leaning toward the D7100.

Comments appreciated. Thanks.

Hey there, I am shooting the D800 mainly, but also have a D7100 for wildlife and used as a backup/second body. I have had two bodies going back now several years, and when the D700 came out, I was shooting the D300s as a second body - then I got a D90, followed by a D7000 when they were released, and recently upgraded to a D7100 giving my wife the D7000. So I have been shooting the FX/DX combo for a while. Both have their advantages.

If you are leaning towards a D7100 - I can tell you that it will not disappoint -- sharp images, especially on my 200-400 which blew me away -- the difference was night and day in comparison to the D7000.

I may...but I got the D800 after giving up waiting for the D300 replacement...now I don't have to worry about waiting. If it does come I'm ready, if not I'll probably look in a different direction, will it be a 7100...perhaps, but a used D7000 could fill the need as well.

I currently shoot both, but I also am selling my DX stuff to fund a second FX body.

I am shooting with a D600 and I wanted to buy a TC for my 300 AF-S, however, for $200 more I opted for a D7000

i've got a D3, a D300, and a D7000, with a D700 on the way...i can tell you it's kind of a pain to mix the two when it comes to lens choices....once you get used to a certain set on DX, and make it work, then you gotta re-tool everything to get the same range/usefulness out of FX....

it would be a lot easier if i just shot ALL FX, but i still have some DX glass that i cant really let go.....and i have an underwater housing for a D7000, that make it so i can NEVER get rid of my D7000 and 10.5 fisheye.....so if i'm gonna keep the D7000 i might as well keep my 17-55 instead of picking up a 24-70 for my FX bodies.....

and i had an 11-16, which i debated on getting rid of, but ended up getting a 17-35mm instead, but that begs the question, why didn't i just sell the 17-55, and use the 17-35 on DX when i needed a normal range zoom, and still keep the 11-16...lol....it really sucks actually trying to weigh the options....

I will say that i have eyed the D7100 pretty hard.....i like that they added the "playback magnification on center button" feature, which i SORELY missed on my D7000......and the new AF system is a big selling point.....but from the comparisons i did, it's not a big enough leap from the D7000 in high iso performance to want to switch....even when you down-sample the D7100 files to 16mp.....

Case in point: Here is a D7000 and D7100 shot side by side....the D7100 has been down sampled to 16mp, both shots at iso 3200, viewed at 100%: D7100 on the right.

PLUS, when you consider that you get 6 raw frames before the buffer fills on the d7100, and 10 on the d7000, i couldn't add the d7100 to my bag...

I use both. The new D7000 firmware improved the raw files and video quality. I've also used the D800 and D800e a lot of times and I still kept coming back to my D3X, image wise and ergonomics.

I have a D800E which I love, but have been considering adding a D7100 for a while now... I used to have a D90, but sold it to a friend who needed a camera quick. I like having DX for lighter weight travel. I mainly use the D800E, but the combo of the 16-85 and 70-300 on a nice DX body can't be ignored both because of versatility with only 2 lenses, and the light weight... to get the equivalent focal range with FX, I'd be carrying a lot more weight, and a few more lenses.

To me, it's different tools for different jobs. Best IQ I can produce, and don't care about weight so much: FX. Best versatility/utility to weight ratio (travel, hiking, etc): DX.

Have a D200 with a 70-200mm f/2.8G VRII mounted to it all the time but never seems to use it after getting the D800 shooting in DX mode.
So, yes still shooting FX and DX on my D800.

I have used both in the past, but now I'm FX only. However, if a D400 ever makes an appearance, I'll probalby grab it for wildlife. It really boils down to if you have a particular use in mind for dx or if you're just in the mood to get a new camera

I have a D800E and D7100, I like the D7100 so much I've been considering selling the D800E. ISO performance is what sets them apart for me otherwise for my needs, the D7100 does all I want.

I too have a D800E and D7100. After lots of doubts (fps, buffer and handling) I got tired of waiting and bought a D7100 a few weeks ago, mainly for birding. I must say the D7100 surprises me positively. The fps and buffer is low but manageable. AF is as good and fast as the D800E. When the long awaited D400 arrives I'll trade the D7100 in for that. I don't have big hands but I find the D7100 to small for my hands and I find the ergonomics of the D800E better. No remorse up to know. I showed this Blue Tit already in an other thread.

My workhorses are the D4 and D800 with the D3 as a backup but I still very often use the D7000. I am also considering the new D7100 for wildlife. DX has a lot of advantages: reach, compactness, cost...

For spec. work and BIF I'll still shoot DX, but when I'm gettin' paid it's FX all the way...
absolutely love the look. We get along great like this, everybody knows their place.

The more bodies I acquire the more I leave at home. I am quite happy with the DX mode on my D800e if I need it. I don't see myself hauling another body, even if it's smaller. The backup stays at home, where it belongs.

I did pre-order a Ricoh GR, which is APS-C sensor sized and apparently semi-pocketable.

I've been shooting both formats since the d700 came out. Currently own 6 bodies that I use, depending on the need, listed in my profile. For all paid shoots, I carry a minimum of 2 bodies, with a backup in the car of at least the shoot's primary body.

When the light is good or when I will use flash guns, I'll generally use both DX and FX, usually the d3s or d800 and d300. For low light work, FX.

For general knock around, daily carry, I'll use DX, usually the d5100 if I want light and small, otherwise I'll carry whatever suits my fancy as I head out the door.

I'm anxiously awaiting a d400 to replace my d300 as my primary DX camera. If Nikon would tweak that d5100 sensor and put it in the d800 body with all the features, plus 8fps, I'd be very happy.

As a side note, I've tried using the DX mode on the d800 and don't like doing that. I prefer even the d7k to using the DX mode on the d800.

My thinking is along this line: You can shoot with a DX and an FX body, but I keep grabbing the wrong lens. I have to actually LOOK at a lens to see if it's for FX or DX. So I figured I could just get two FX bodies and if I 'need' DX, just shoot in DX mode.
