p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Desert storm

Taken a couple weeks ago at Grand Vista point at Canyonlands NP. I could see people parked alongside the road on the way in to get this rainbow. I continued to the overlook and grabbed my camera. Too wet for filters and not enough time for tripod. It was raining but my 16-35 hood keeps the front element pretty dry.

At least two of these were shot by resting the camera on a post for the guard wall. When it stopped raining I went back out with the tripod and filters but the scene was not as dramatic.

Ben,
Very nice series. The light in the first one is exquisite. I also like the detail you have in #2. Well shot series.

Outstanding. The second is my favorite but all are great.

Great set Ben. I like #2 the best. The double rainbow is seen best in that one.

Hey Ben,

Sometimes there just isn't time for a tripod, and then it's up to knowing enough about photography and one's camera to get a sharp shot while handholding. I take it your 16-35 doesn't have VR? Mine does, and boy, it can be a life saver, even if it's only once out of every 50,000 shots.

Good work on these, #1 is my least favorite, I don't like the light and coloring on that one rock in the lower right. #2 is my favorite, that is a very clean composition, and it really shows the rainbow off well. #3 would be my next favorite, well done with a wide view and no distracting elements.

Thanks Sunny, Camperjim and harsha.

Jim, glad you liked 2 and appreciate the comments on favorites. The Canon 16-35 does not have IS, but the shutter speeds were high enough at ISO200 to work fine. I need a tripod more for focus and composition, especially focus when you are trying for maximum dof.

Thanks in advance for any future comments and if I don't reply it will be to avoid bumping my post.

I love the lighting, which shows depth in the canyon and isn't easy to capture there. I think I like the second image best.

Sweet! I'll go against the grain: #1 is my favorite here

I gotta go with #1 or #2. I think the difference is processing and cropping.

You caught great conditions. It's cool when those storms blow through there.

Nice sequence! Sometime we just have to get wet! It was easily worth it. Thanks.

The best photos are taken during the worse conditions.
Lovely set Ben!

Excellent images and way to be prepared! I especially like the darker, more ominous look of low clouds and shadows on the left of number 1.

My favorite is #2. The rainbow isn't as large as on #1 but the color on the rocks more than makes up for it.
