Ok, I'm confused as my 85 does NOT have that crinkle finish, but is nice and smooth. That's the finish on my 50 f/1.4. Maybe you are right the very first batches were the old finish and they quickly changed. I got mine about 6 months after they came out I think.
Yeah when I first saw this thread I thought I remember reading the 85 first came in the old 'crinkle' finish but soon go the newer finish . But as general wisdom said not i thought I must have been thinking something else . But that image does show the crinkle .
The above images seem to have come from the 2010 PMA show and the original press release photos also have the crinkle/matte finish- but remember these are pre-production versions. I'd bet by the time the 85/1.4 was actually released, they all came with the new finish. If I recall correctly 2010 was right around that time that the new finish started appearing with all their newly made lenses.

Ah good point, and now I think of it, I remember all the ads in magazines only ever showing the smooth finish right from the outset.
