p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Serious Athlete

I just acquired a 7D and this is one of my first shots:

My only lens is the 18-55mm non-IS (the OLD kit lens from the rebel series). It's pretty terrible, actually. I had to tweak the color a bit because images from it are so washed out and lacking contrast. I hope I didn't over-do it. But, then again, I was going for a dramatic look. What do you think?

I plan on doing better than that. I'm deciding between a 17-55 f2.8 or a 28-70 f2.8.

Thanks for the advice, though.

To me the photo looks pretty good ...

You will be happy with either one of the two lenses you are looking.

Not to be an ass but you deserve honesty. It's a snapshot. A 1dx, 24-70ii and a ton of post processing wouldn't make this look interesting. Nor would a point and shoot camera make it look any worse.

If you have to preface something in such a way, it usually means that you're about to contradict yourself.

That being said, your critique is fair enough. It fairly well was a "snapshot."

But, if I can't snap shots of the family playing whiffle ball on a beautiful mother's day, then I don't know why I even bother taking pictures at all.

Don't let the whiners spoil your fun. I think everyone here knows that feeling when you get a new camera and are eager to test it out.

For this image, a landscape crop at center frame would still retain the ball in the image and produce a much more compelling composition.

I agree with rcheli, a different crop would take out the power lines and emphasize the action. And the 17-55 2.8 usm is a great lens.
