It is very sad to me that my 1400 prints look better then my 3880 prints. Using Red River Paper and their profiles for the paper and printers the 1400 hands down looks better ;( I paid $185.00 for my 1400 3 years ago and it still works great.

Your costs per print on the 1400 would be way higher i'm guessing. I don't have the 1400, but it could be something configured wrong on the 3880. It would also be helpful in your description to have more qualities instead of "looks better". What looks better? Color, contrast, dmax, sharpness etc. etc.

I had the 3800 before and was never happy with the gloss differential and then it clogged big time so I bought the 1400. Then a few years ago I bought the 3880 hoping the gloss differential would be better but it really isn't so that is the main issue is the gloss differential. I have sprayed prints in the past and they make them look better but is just a pain. The carts are a lot smaller on the 1400 but at least I can buy them at Office Max when they go out.

A friend of mine has the 3880, and the prints are just drop dead gorgeous. The 1400 uses dye-based inks and the 3880 uses pigment based inks. The way they react to the paper may require different profiles for each ink type.

Try a few test prints using Epson papers. If the 3880 still looks bad, contact Epson because there is something wrong with the printer.

I have been using the right profiles for the paper/printer and I have tried Epson paper and it still has the "gd" it is like it is not laying ink on the paper where the picture is bright...fine if you put in frame but if you don't you can really see it. As far as color and everything else the two look the same.

If it's the gloss differential that bothers you (and it bothers me, also), but you still would prefer pigment-based inks, consider the Epson R2000. It has pigment ink and a gloss optimizer cartridge that covers the prints as they print. I have the 3880 and the R2000 and rank them a draw on the subjective look of the prints. I could never figure out why Epson doesn't incorporate the gloss optimizer feature into their "pro" level printers. It works very well.

How does everyone deal with gloss differential or do must not even care...mainly I print posters and 4x6 to 8x10 for action shots.

Dye inks are always going to look better. Pigment inks are going to last longer.

I print on Ink Jet Art Micro Ceramic Luster, which is similar to Epson Luster, with a 3880 and I've never seen any gloss differential. I remember it from years ago on other printers. Maybe it's the Red River paper? Is it glossy?

I use Arctic Polar Luster fairly often with my 3880 and have experienced gloss differential rarely. On those images that do exhibit it, I'll reprint them on a different paper - usually Epson Hot Press Natural or Bright and sometimes on RR Polar Pearl Metallic. Eventually, I'll get an image that's what I expect it to be (no gd). But, as I said, it has been rare...

I purchased some Ink Jet Art Micro Ceramic Luster paper and it is about the same as the Red River paper as for as the GD but I didn't relize that you have to pay for profiles from them and the paper is thiner and just seems so much cheaper then the Red River paper what profiles do people use with the Ink Jet Ceramic?

The 3880 prints beautiful images so if yours doesn't look that way something must be wrong.

It does but I'm just not a fan of the GD and the 3800 did the same thing

Haven't printed on anything glossy or luster (still glossy) since I left the chemical dark room....... don't miss it one bit.....don't know why you would want to. Digital lets you print on so many beautiful matte papers and there are so many out there that are wonderful why print on gloss ? The outstanding print quality from the 3880 really comes alive when you start using high quality matte papers and if you are really picky about your prints you should be making your own profiles......Just my opinion of course.

For all portrait and landscape stuff I send everything out to Bay Photo...it's just the small orders for action shots I print myself and those look better on luster instead of matte in my opinion...thank you for your suggestion though.
