I have a tendency to prefer ultra wide angle, maybe my eyes are spaced too far apart :-)
I search for trees to include at the corners which almost always means UWA. But this time I also shot a longer focal length which could probably be done from many locations.
Edit to add crop of 16x9 crop
Ok, here is a crop of the 18mm don't see a way to add it to the poll however.
Yep when you start a poll you can't include images until you edit, (as far as I can see) I was editing while you were replying., They should be up now.
Lovely shots. I like the 35mm version which shows the reflections in the water/river more vividly.
At what time did you take these? My October shooting place-to-be!

I like them both. Tough call. As is, I prefer the 35 mm version. I do like the foreground trees in the 18 mm version but I would crop out about half of the sky.

This was a week ago Tuesday. I had half a day rain free and this was part of that half. This is a sunrise place. The rocks are pretty drab in full sun, it takes golden light. A month earlier I get even better light but a lousy composition with even more sky. I went back and worked at getting less sky. I placed the sky at the 2/3 line.
The only practical way to get those trees included is to go wide which includes too much sky so you would need a 16x9 crop later which is easy to do, There is a rock guard wall to the left that needs to be eliminated and prevents stepping back further.
Love the second one, Ben, for its detail. Normally, I might prefer the wider view, but the sky just isn't adding anything. I do kinda like the trees, so the 16 x 9 crop works for me. You know, I really admire the way you keep working to improve given scenes.

Thanks, I am not done with this one. I spent way too many sunrise at Mesa Arch. I want to use the results of this poll to help me do the next one better. And you can get better light than this. If the full sun touches the cliffs as soon as it breaks above the horizon, it is sweet. This was maybe 20 minutes later as the sun had to clear some low clouds.

My experience there is that a 35mm on full frame is about perfect. After that you can get creative.
In fact I always check your web page for compositional ideas around Moab. This is how I choose the wider shot. It does sow the main feature best, IE the bend of the river.
Thanks Travis and Jim. Now I need to buy another 16x9 aspect frame. My only other frame like that is in use. But this is a common problem for UWA shots, they often need either foreground or sky eliminated.
Hey Ben,
You got some great shots from this area. I was going with the 35mm version but your edited 18mm panorama crop seems to be my personal favorite now.
Thanks for sharing!
