Here are two very long range shot done with handheld 1DX + 600 II + 2xTC III, cropped a fair bit too.

Peter,

You must have been a long way off to have such depth of field on that monstrous goose!!

Db, the focusing distance in both shots was probably about 200 ft.

I like the 2X teleconverter so much that I occasionally use two of them (a Mk II and a Mk III) stacked...

Canon 5D3, 400/2.8 IS, two 2X Canon Teleconverters stacked.

I love mine. It lives on my 400 IS II much of the time.

Forgot to mention, I used the drop-in polarizer.

Today's catch: 300 f/2.8 IS MkII + 2xTC MkIII.
Not an ideal combo for shooting fast and small BIF against busy background in the proximity of the bird, but once the bird is in focus, the result looks OK.

Well done, Peter..... these are tough shots even with a faster focusing and lighter 400 5.6L, more so with a 600 f/5.6!

I find it easy to grow fond of the 2xTC III, though I have a way to go when it comes to BIF.

...but there are other things too...

5DIII + 70-200II without and with the 2xTCIII, not so bad to carry, easy to use.

Both shots taken hand held from the same point, incidentally.

...gettin so that my favored kit is 5DIII, 70-200II, 1.4xTCIII, 2xTCIII cause they all get along so well with each other, and a 24-105 cause I might something that I usually don't.

This thread certainly proves that the 2.0TC is a worthy investment. Especially paired with the super telephoto lenses and the 70-200II.

I just purchased the 2.0 III in April. I need the reach for the places I shoot at. I have no complaints about using the 2x. All of these are with the 600II.

I just used a canon 2x III on a Canon 300 f4 to shoot an eagle perched in it's nest. I had to manually focus on a tripod. It was windy and I never had much hope for the shot, but it turned out ok. Not an award winner but postable.

Beautiful. I love the water beading in the close up, showing the natural water resistance of the feathers.
