I had the pleasure of attending my very first workshop with Marc Adamus this past March, this time exploring both the California Sierras and Death Valley. Here are a few from the Death Valley portion of the workshop. The "pano' of the Mesquite Dunes features our fearless leader acting as our "dune model". It was a great and memorable five days!!

Surprisingly I like the willow abstract the most. Any chance you could go into some details on how you captured and processed this image?

Sure (and thanks)!

It was shot while panning from top to bottom, giving it that blurred/motion feel. It's not an earth shattering concept but not something most of us would think to do with a scene as simple as that. That was the beauty of Marc's workshop - getting us to open our minds to think outside the norm.

Thanks for the info. I’ve herd other people doing this same thing, but for some reason I cant figure out how all the lines wouldn’t be parallel and exactly the same length. I figured people use multiple different shots and then stack them on top of each other with varying opacities to so that everything is'nt flowing in the same exact direction.

I'll have to give this a try next time I see some nice colours outside though. Thanks.

Justin, typically the trees may not all be perfectly perpendicular plus when you are panning top to bottom by hand, there will also be some natural right and left movement. If you look at the right side of my image, you'll see what appears to be the trees cutoff at the base. All that is is the trees being obscured by the foreground grasses. The grasses are different heights both left and right so it makes the trees appear to be different lengths as well.

It's all abstract anyway so keep shooting until you find one that is appealing to your eye. I shot dozens like this and only came back with just one or two that caught my eye.

Nice images. You were lucky to get the dunes without footprints :-).

Nice shots. The dunes w Marc in it for scale is cool as well as the Aspens.

Yep you pan by hand so that the lines are not too linear.

Nice, Carl. We rarely do the Mesquite Dunes on that tour but conditions that evening sure were nice. Many of the other locations are my favorites but this dune collection is still pretty darn strong. I like the color contrasts in the sky/dune shot but also feel you could get away with some more warm saturation up there and it would look very nice. The Aspen abstract is BY FAR my favorite of this particular set, and I knew that was awesome as soon as I saw it.....I don't think anyone did it better that whole season. I'd be very interested to see others from the Joshua's, night and Sierra locations too... .on your website? I finally have a few weeks off coming up and can check it all out.

Hi Carl,
It's a great set. I enjoy all images but the Eureka shot with the sky is my personal favorite. Perhaps a little heavy on saturation/contrast but I like the effect.

Nice series. Aspen shot is my favorite.
#2 is also very nice, I like the texture and repeating shapes of the dunes.

Sasha.

Thanks, Marc!! Much appreciated. I still have a number of images I need to visit but have been busy with work and a new house. I'll post some of the ones mentioned in the next week or so.
