When do you use it? I have tried it for a short while and found that it worked well for horizontals but not verticals.

I'm not sure which grip you're talking about, and for which body?

"Years ago" I used the VG-10 for the EOS A2E and it was, in retrospect, not that much of a bargain. It was simply a battery holder with an extra shutter button and perhaps a customizable button.

What grip are you talking about, that is better for horizontals and not verticals?

Frankly, and I say this with respect, what you have said sounds a bit backwards as the stress position of an uncoupled camera body shooting portrait (vertical) orientation, is what might push me into the (loving) arms of an accessory grip. Horizontals (landscape) aren't a problem for me, personally.

I think he means a wee monopod with a bicycle grip on it. Works well for video and heavy gear when you're mobile. You need to use a tripod collar in order to flip between vertical and horizontal. Kirk makes a couple models:

I often use my 6-section monopod sorta like one or tuck it into my belly...
