Considering the Speed Booster - my understanding is that if you want the very best out of it you have to tune the SB to get the least purple fringing and vignetting and that tuning is specific to a single lens.

This is the procedure -

http://www.metabones.com/smart-adapter-operation-manual/155-infinity-adjustment-speed-booster-only

The alternative is the Voigtlander 15mm.

Which would you choose and why?

Thanks in advance.

My 21 couldn't get this shot without going into portrait. 4 sec ISO 100 21mm f 5.6

I recently got the Speed Booster but doesn't like it very much because I think my DSLR lenses are to large and doesn't balance well on my NEX 6 when doing handheld shooting and I am probably going to sell the Speed Booster. The CV 15 on the other hand is a very nice match for my NEX 6. You should be aware that the NEX 7 handles very wide M lenses worse than the NEX 6 from what I have read and that should also be factored into the decision.

Don't bother with the voigtlander 15 . it produce bad vignetting and color shift on NEX-7, and you have to spent lot of time and effort to get rid of that(even with cornering, that means extra steps in your workflow and more noise)

wait for the zeiss 12mm or get the sony UWA zoom.

Unless you have to have a faster lens I'd recommend the 10-18

Or if you don't mind the size of the Zeiss 21, you could get the Samyang 14. Costs about the same as a Speedbooster, and i think you'll get better corners than the Cv15 or the SB+zeiss.

I have the Nex 7 and the Voigtlander 15, the Sigma 10-20 and now the Sony 10-18/4. The Voigtlander can be made to work, so long as you use the Adobe Lightroom flat field plug in. The Sigma works ok, too, but I've found that it is difficult to focus. When you nail it, though, it is very sharp.

The Sony is sharp, has OS, Autofocus..... Is now in my bag every tome I go out.

I assume that a Zeiss 21mm on a Speedbooster would not produce sharpness to the edge of the cathedral shot, but would love to see what it would do!

The chief ray angles are too acute with these UWA 'M' mount lenses for the NEX not to avoid the color fringing and corner sharpness deficiencies. For anything wider than 28mm (some may argue 35mm to completely avoid these issues), sticking with the native-mount lenses may be a better bet. Check Lloyd Chambers subcription site where he notes, "the chief ray angle is the primary determinant of color shading and off-center sharpness with M-mount lenses on the Sony NEX-7....

BTW, on the Metabones website Q&A section, there's the following:

Q: I want to use my Leica M, Contax G, Contax rangefinder and Nikon rangefinder lenses on Speed Booster™!!!

A: Sorry folks, but there is not enough room for the optics. An SLR lens is required, such as Leica R or Contax C/Y. Rangefinder lenses won't work.

From what I've read here, it's just the NEX-7 that has these problems, so I think your statement is a bit too general. People here have been using the CV 15 and lenses like the Contax Biogon 28/2.8 with very good results on the NEX-5N and the NEX-6 seems to perform almost as good.

The question here was for the NEX 7 and that was what I was referring to.

My wife carries a NEX5 with the kit lens and I was able to get that same shot (a better moon) in landscape but the edges really suffer when compared to the Distagon.

I now have the Sigma 19mm which for $100 lens is really incredible. It Imatests at 1000 on the NEX and extremely flat. Insanely flat.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeissgeist/8732350460/in/photostream

As does the 30mm Sigma

http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeissgeist/8731227675/in/photostream/

But as often discovered - it's not without a tradeoff - both Sigmas cast a pink hue that is difficult to clean in post - its sometimes up and sometimes down but using a custom WB in the field prevents it. But I've done that and forgotten to reset back to auto WB later and really end up with some crap.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeissgeist/8732350310/in/photostream/lightbox/

That's one thing I really like about Zeiss, consistent color across the board and auto WB always works perfectly.

A good copy of the lowly Sony 16/2.8 is arguably better, faster & cheaper than the CV15/4.5 outside of the very extreme corners. I had one (borrowed) for a while with my NEX-7 and was extremely impressed at the performance, it's reputation is far worse than the performance (which was better than a good OM 24/2.8 on FF). The 10-18 is better of course but for a 24mm-e it really is hard to beat the 16/2.8 if you are willing to return a bad copy for replacement.

My Leica Elmarit M 28/2.8 version II has very good corners and almost zero color shift, I've not used cornerfix on any shots yet.

My CV15 does color shift on my 7 fairly strong that I don't really use it right now, and getting a good profile is challenging because of the huge DOF shows detail in whatever you use to make the profile.
But on the 5N/R & 6 it's awesome, just check some of the shots in the NEX image thread.
The new Zeiss 12 sounds like it may be perfect for the 7.

I'm very willing to do that. Sad thing is the camera shops are equally willing to sell the crap off to the next customer that doesn't know any better. It would be better if they went back for QC to the manufacturer.

Max, I tried 4 Sony 16s, and returned each one, and, beleive me, I was not that picky. OTOH, I am beginning to see really nice images from the Touit 12mm. When is your trip?

Is this about the Contax G or the ZE/ZF flavor of Zeiss 21/2.8? And what's with the portrait mode, how would that change things?

I prefer the landscape view but wasn't able to get it and wasn't able to back up any further. The 18 could do it - the 21 could not.

I went to look at the Touit's MTF but they aren't on the data sheets at Zeiss Support Downloads. In other news --- the Sigma guys redraw their MTF charts on some lenses so buyers need to look closely.

Interesting Max - interesting but not surprising.

j.liam, thanks for saving me reading the large number of Speedincreaser pages, all one needs to know in one pithy sentence, and from the horse's mouth.

'The new Zeiss 12 sounds like it may be perfect for the 7.'
It's looking that way. Sensor, meet lens. I bet the 12mm has moderate barrel only. APS-C suddenly looks attractive.
