Just interested in hearing about folks who like the 6 x 7 aspect ratio. If you are drawn to this format, what is it that you like about it?

Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of it.

It's basically like shooting 4x5, which itself is my preferred aspect ratio. I just like how the frame looks.

Loved it when I shot film. I used both a Pentax 67 and a Mamiya RB67

It's my favourite aspect ratio. Usually it is 56:69 which is very close to 5:4, so "6x7" doesn't tell the whole truth. With the Pentax 6x7 cameras the ratio is 55:70 mm, which feels perfect.

I usually don't have to crop at all, and I find it more suitable for standing images than anything else I've tried.

Thanks everyone for your replies, but I'm still struggling to see the attraction of 6 x 7 over say, 6 x 9. I've never shot 6 x 7 before so that might be part of the problem. Don't you give up "something" with this narrower format?

If you crop 6x9 slightly, you get 6x7. Use 6x9 if you're more accustomed with that aspect ratio; then try cropping to 6x7 to see if you like it. If you like that aspect ratio, with a 6X9 camera you can take also 6x7 pictures

6x9 in portrait orientation always feels too narrow to me. 6x7 works perfectly in either orientation.

6x7 is my favourite format. Just a really nicely balanced aspect ratio I think. Personally I dislike 3:2 - too wide for me. It's just personal preference, between 3:2 and 6x6 nothing is wrong so to speak. What I like about the 6x7 format is the formality of it.

Of course, but you also get "something" else. For me it feels more natural and it gets much harder to see what angle of view was used. A bit more "in your face" as well, and you also get a larger image area at certain restrictions for width and height.

Instead of thinking that width of the image is cropped, you could think that you've gotten more height. This is the main reason that I don't like 50 mm on 24x36. It's just too narrow on the short side.

6x7 prints easiest for me to an 8x10 or 11x14.

I enjoyed the 6 X 7 format proportion of my Mamiya 7II, It was the same proportion as my 4" X 5" Linhofs and my Toho Shimo 45X cameras. I very much like the proportion.

strangely, when I first started looking at medium format, I thought it looked a bit odd.

but after shooting some myself, the images themselves just spoke to me.

it's important to compose to your frame. some 6x7 shots by people who know a lot of 3:2 compositions but dont understand the reasoning behind them make some really ugly 6:7 photos IMO, which probably contributed to my not liking other people's 6x7s very much. I suspect that that has something to do with a philosophy Ive long believed; you should know the rules so that you can either follow them or break them spectacularly, and bad photos tend to be those which land somewhere in the middle.

Great post and reasoning.

I photograph better using film, and 6x7 film in particular, and maybe I'll have to add "aspect ratio preference" to my list of reasons why this is the case,

3:2 (690, 35mm) is a 'letter box' semi-pano format.
Probably arose due to film roll usage specifications, rather than aesthetic issues.

6X7 is an excellent format, stylish for a wider range of subject matter - but esp. landscapes - and fits stock paper sizes. And you are not forever looking across the frame as in 35mm, yet it's quite easy to compose. But, like the square, you better have a good foreground and a way to deal with it. 6X7 is a favourite MF for LF shooters as they are already comfortable with the aspect ratio.

My favourite however, remains 645, or rather 4:3, which is what a lot of horizontal 6x7 images end up cropped to in output. Or cropped more, like this one that ended up as a little narrower than 3:2 as it needed to lose some sky and water both. The point is you have these options, and I find vertical crops easier to do also.

When shooting film, I used 645, 6x7, 6x9, and a 6x12 back on a 4x5 field camera. My favourite format was 6x7, using a Fuji GW670II (56mm x 69mm, AR = 1.23).

When I shot film I loved 6x7 but lately I am drawn towards 6x6. Go figure...Other than my Noblex Pano camera....

I echo what others have said regarding 645 and 6x7; I prefer 645 due to ease of printing in standard sizes; much easier to find standard picture frames than custom frames.

I currently have a Mamiya RB67 and a couple of 645's. I love my 645's!
