p.1 #1 · Anyone use SD card as back-up in 5D3 for weddings?

I can't believe how slow my 5D3 becomes when shooting full RAW on the CF and large JPG on the SD card.
Any firmware coming up to address this issue?

Thanks!

What is the speed of your cards? Mine was super slow with the 30mb/s so I upgraded to the 90mb/s and no longer have issues.

The fastest possible way to record to both CF and SD is shooting Full RAW to both. Any conversion (including mRAW or JPG) will slow it down, even with fast cards.

The 45mb/s cards (reading around 30mb/s) work MUCH better than the 30mb/s (which actually only read at 10mb/s due to Canon's issue with SD card technology used). It's a problem with the SD protocol and/or firmware. Rob Gailbraith did a massive test using CF cards and SD cards to see which ones performed best in certain cameras. Nikon suffers from slow SD transfer rates as well, just not nearly as bad as Canon.

Good to know. Now I have to do some upgrading of my CF cards.

I've never noticed a speed issue writing JPEGs to SD. I use single shot.

Yeah, huge slow down if you write different files to SD & CF.

Writing RAW to both SD and CF gives me good speeds and I use slow cheap cards.

Maybe I just do not fire enough frames at one time to ever notice.

So shooting full RAW to both cards would be faster than shooting RAW on CF and JPG on SD?

once the buffer fills up though the SD card is still CRAZY slow to write. It's pretty annoying if you're trying to do some bursts.

I'll be trying out my 5d3 for a wedding tomorrow, I've pretty much calibrated my main lenses on it and have two 32gb sd cards from my D800 to use for backup...so I'll see if it feels slow.

How to get the fastest write speeds on a Canon 5dmk3.

Yep, writing different file types (RAW to one and JPG to the other) is what slows it down

It's fast enough for me though - I never had to wait for the camera shooting RAW + JPG
(I don't shoot many bursts though, just a few short ones)

What method do you use for calibration?

I NEED to shoot raw + jpeg to the cf card as we transfer our small jpegs using my 5d2 and wifi grip to my ipad during the meal.

I use sd card and cf card and its painfully slow especially during walking down the aisle shots Etc.

I wanted to try out a faster sd card to how much of a difference there was actually

Real life...if that doesn't work then I will use other methods like live view autofocus acquisition testing.

Problem with SD is, it's so cheap...half the price.
