I have narrowed my backpacking tripod choice down to the Gitzo GT1531 or GT1541. I realize these tripods are rated to hold 17.6 lbs per their website. But I'd like to ask those folks who own these tripods how they work with a 70-200 f2.8 lens. Any input much appreciated. Thank you.

I use the lighther GT-0540 CF with my 70-200/2.8L IS II and 1DX. It's not very stable in a wind, when it needs some extra weight or a steadying hand; otherwise, it's fine.

I own both those tripods. They are ok to use with that lens in normal shooting conditions. The 1531 is a bit more stable. The difference in thickness of the last leg-section is rather big on those tripods.

Wow! I use a 0541 and, even with my modest NEX, I avoid extending the last section as much as I can...

The 1531 is perfectly fine with the 70-200. I use this combo along with the 1D lV and X a lot.

I have used my 5D and 100-400 (a bit lighter I believe than the 70-200) extended on a 1541 and it works in a pinch stable enough even done some astro stuff with it.

I have a Gitzo GT1542T. I've used the 70-200 f2.8 with both 5D and 1D bodies with excellent results, attaching the lens ring (not the body) to the ball head. If it's windy, I would apply some weight to the tripod to help keep it anchored firmly. And, I'd be inclined to not raise the extension tube all the way up. Otherwise, no reservations.
