It's hard to beat the price and performance of a 55-250.

But he was asking for a TELEfoto lens not a ZOOM lens

Another vote for 55-250. Do not buy a new one! They gouge on that lens new, you need to find one that was broken out of a kit.

I'd also grab a used 70 200 f4.

If 200 is long enough, then by far the 70-200 F4L is the way to go. You can get the non IS used for less the $500. If you need IS or longer than 300 the Tamron gets good reviews, I have the Canon version and my daughter has the 55-250. I prefer the 70-300 over the 55-250. I can use it on either body and I prefer the IQ. The 55-250 is much smaller though and would make a good travel option.

My vote goes for Tamron 70-300 VC

The money left can be spent in a flash or a set of filters for the Sigma 10-20

My first good telephoto/zoom was the original Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG etc. It was a fine lens, which I sold a couple of years ago when I bought the Canon 70-200 II.

If you want a stop faster (not to be sneezed at, in less light) it's a viable option. If you don't care about the extra stop, the Canon f/4 is an excellent lens.

Here's another vote for Tamron 70-300 VC. Mine is one of the sharpest lenses I've had and the vc just locks on and holds the image.

How come noone suggest tamron 70-200 2.8 or sigma 70-200 2.8.

I believe you can pick those 2.8 zoom lenses about 500 dollar or little more ...

I have used all of the lenses mentioned. The L is significantly over budget even used for a good copy. Tamron I felt was to soft. I liked the 55-250 very much. I was able to sell it for more than I paid for it. I purchased the 70-300 IS non L and it is currently on sale REFURBISHED about $260.00 dollars. I am amazed at the guys I shoot with that have the 70-300 non L IS, the 70-200 2.8 and 4, that ending up packing the 70-300 weight and they like the IQ. My perspective JR

Used Canon 70/200 f4
Doubt you would regret that purchase.

Try the 70-300 f4.0-5.6 IS USM. It really is a nice lens. I have used both the 55-250 and own the 70-300 and definately prefer the metal mount to the 55-250's plastic mount. Picture quality on the 70-300 is better too I think.

I bought my 70-300 in 2007 and still love it today, and though I payed $550 then, I have seen them for $360/370 recently and that is a bargan. Most interesting is how well it performs on a full frame. Years earlier I had the 30D and later 7D, but recently added a 6D. I works well on that camera too, and the 55-250 wont.

Finally, 75-anything from canon, avoid. As for 70-200 f4 L, non-IS, wonderful lens. Used that too and really liked it's sharpness and image quality but............... No IS, and I won't buy any telephoto again without IS. Too many photo's are soft because you can't hold 150-300mm at 1/125 sec or less, but often need too. 2 years ago I bought the 70-200 f2.8, but not IS. It does what I need, but gosh I wish it had IS, so I won't ever buy a telephoto without IS again.

Just my 2 cents. From an engineer with a camera problem.

This is an absolute no brainer and the price is damn good for an excellent 300mm with IS to boot. I can find them for well under $400. Run don't walk.

I have a question regarding the Canon 70-200 F4L many are recommending. Most specify the non-IS version. Is this only to meet the budget needs of the post, or is the non-IS version considered to have superior IQ or other feature(s) to the IS version?

To meet the budget needs of the post.

Though it is very sharp. I have read opinions suggesting it is the sharpest in the range but have seen no test to back that up.

I use that and the 2.8 image stabilized and don't really feel a need to pixel peep to see if one is marginally sharper.

The light weight does mean it is great for street photography.

Here are some taken with it.

For $200 (or less used), it is hard to beat the EF-S 55-250 for a fun lens on crop camera. Not the greatest, but certainly serviceable.

For around $300 used, the EF 70-300 IS is a good deal, and has better build and image quality.

Next up would be the EF 70-200/4 L non-IS for $400-500 used.

The last two can eventually be used on full frame camera if you move that way. I owned the first two, and hear good things about the L lens. Of the first two, I'd choose the 70-300 IS for myself in your situation.

Noone has mentioned the Canon 300 F4L non-IS. I've seen it on eBay used for right around $500. I had this lens and loved it on crop bodies.
