Say I want to spend <$500 on a telephoto lens, what would be my best bet? I currently only have a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 and a Nifty Fifty.

55-250 f4-5.6 IS but I would highly recommend stretching just a couple more dollars for the 70-200 f/4L

+1. You may find 70-200 F4L non IS for less than $500 on B&S board though.. Need to keep looking.

Another vote for the 55-250 IS. A bargain and takes good pictures. The 70-200 F/4L (non-IS version) is also a good choice.

I really loved the 55-250mm IS on crop, very sharp even wide open. Only reason I sold is for full frame, I even looked up if molding it would work. It can be found for $100-150 here in SD, new or used, just be patient and test it out. It was included in a lot of kits so there cheap.

You can def find used copies of the 70-200f4 non-is for <$500. The USM is nice, but it's larger (size and weight), white (stands out more for better or worse), and lacks IS, of course. I really enjoyed it on my 5dc.

I heard good things about the Tampon 70-300 IS (or their version of Is) with image quality better than the Canon non-L but below the L. I haven't personally shot it though

So who makes the Tampon 70-300? That is a new one?

perhaps the tamron 70-300 VC
(better focus than the 55-250 and 70-300 non-L from Canon)

70-200 f4 L non-IS is a cracking lens for the money. If you prefer primes also check out the Canon 85mm f1.8 and 100mm f2 lenses. If these latter two are long enough for your purposes they offer really superb IQ for the money.

Have to agree with this. I've heard good things about the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, but not used it.

depends on use. Travel: 55-250, by far the smallest and lightest.

Either Canon or Tamron 70-300 are pretty decent, both are a little better than the 55-250, but twice as expensive and (in Tamron's case) much larger.

Canon 70-200 f4 if you want the fastest AF.

My vote is for the Tamron 70-300 VC. In my experience is noticeably better than the canon 55-250 and Canon's 70-300. If you don't need IS (most people would say that you do in this range, me included) Canons 70-200 f/4 non is can be had for 500 used. The 70-200 will be the best IQ, build, autofocus of any of the three.

Haven't tried the Tamron (or the Tampon for that matter) 70-300, but I did have, and liked, the Canon 70-300 IS. It's pretty sharp, light, and works well.

The Canon 70-200 f/4 non-IS is an excellent lens, and would allow the use of a teleconverter to get to near 300 mm. Though if you wanted 300 mm now, it wouldn't work for you unless you wanted to spend for a teleconverter also.

Stay away from the 75-300 Canons - not a good reputation.

Does that mean it is white like the Canon's lenses?

One more vote for the 55-250. I borrowed my Dad's a couple of years ago as a lightweight alternative to my heavy 70-200/2.8IS. I came away very impressed by the sharpness and overall performance, so I bought one for myself. A very nice lens and very lightweight.

This one is easy to answer. The 70-200mm f4L non-IS is an awesome lens regardless of price. The fact that its one of the most affordable L lenses ever is a bonus! Its tack sharp even wide open with great color/contrast ad bokeh. Superb lens.

Sample image I made last year (5D3):
