p.1 #1 · Should I buy 5D3 and 24-105 F4L or buy 24-70 F2.8 II

Hi guys,

I just have a budget to upgrade my gear after selling my 24-104 F4L and other stuff.
The question is: should I buy 5D3 + 24-105 F4L as a combo for $3,799.
Or buy 24-70 F2.8 II for $2,049 to use with my 1D4?

I do like taking photo of kids practice martial arts. My thought is that 5D3 high ISO can make up for the F4 aperture of 24-105. But at the same time, I heard that 24-70 F2.8 II is amazing and I think It is a huge advantage for me to use on 1D4.

Help me out.

Thanks a bunch,

- Tam

I wouldn't bother with an F4 lens for any indoor sporting event - regardless of the 5DIII's ISO ability.

I'd probably just buy a 85/1.8 prime for your 1DIV and call it a day... unless of course you particuarly want a 5DIII

Thanks for the tips. I do have 85/1.8 but the problem is that the gym is kind of small. 50mm is a good focal length for my situation but the 50/1.4 Micro USM is not keep up well interm of AF tracking.

I probably go with 24-70 F2.8 II, since I love my work horse 1D4

The 5DIII is an amazing camera especially if you don't need more than 6fps. The autofocus is amazing both for static and moving subjects and having the confidence to use any of the cross type focus points for either scenario is priceless. As for the 24-70 II, it is absolutely fantastic. I got mine about a week ago and every shot I have taken has been tack sharp at 100% view. It's as sharp as my 70-200 2.8 II. My 24-70 Version I was no slouch but was not even in the same ballpark as the version II. For indoor sports I have never shot sports at F4 without a flash. Without flash, F2.8 is the smallest aperture I typically use.
