New Canon EOS Rebel SL1 now in stock!
The newly released Canon EOS Rebel SL1 with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is in stock at B&H Photo for $799.

The SL1 incorporates a brand new Canon 18mp APS-C sensor, a new high-precision f/2.8 center point and it's currently the smallest DSLR money can buy.

Photozone posted a review on the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. According to the resolution tests, the lens is surprisingly excellent.

Yeah, I think it is significantly overpriced, but then I think all of Canon's gear is overpriced. This is just charging what the market will bear. I think it should be $599 but we will have to see how well it sells at $799

It's a little steep, but it'll probably drop a bit after a few months.

Give it time. dSLRs and mirrorless in lower segment loose value really fast. Even tho this will probably slower as its sorta "one-of-the kind".

Personally I never could see the appeal in Rebels.

I had a Rebel xsi and blew the shutter after only 40K clicks and bought a 40D and know I can never go back to Rebels even if they have 18+ Mega Pixels.

They generally have a short shutter life, plastic body's, inferior ergonomics, and just feel cheap in your hands.

Paying $500 for a rebel body seems like a waste, I would rather just have a quality micro 4/3rds or an older body like a 40D/30D for half the price with a warranty (a lot of places have used cameras with 6+ month warranty's).

My 40D's shutter didn't last very long.

Any actual improvements in the 18mp sensor? Or are we just looking at pretty much the same 18mp sensor that Canon has been using for 4 years?

If this had come out 5 or 10 years ago I might have bought it.

10 years ago? 1Ds and 10D were just released. At 18MP with this clean noise, this thing would have cost $10,000 in 2003.

No I mean the mindset, if I were someone (today) who was just looking to buy their first ever digital SLR, this would probably be the one I'd settle on.

Based on my truly limited experience, the noise is clearly better than with the 7D. And the thing is soooo tiny yet handles well in my above average sized hands... The lens is super quiet, decent quality, and focuses well even in shitty LED light in my kitchen. Best of all, it came with the new lens cap
