Here are a couple of snap-shots from April 30 I had to do, after updating my 5DmkIII with the new FW. All shots hand-held, with the 600mm f4 IS mkII + 2x TC mkIII, from around my "back-yard".

more snap-shots here:

I find the AF quite snappy with the 2X mkIII, at least in decent light. Hand-holding the combo for BIF is very far from what I'm able to do right now, though. I'll leave that for the likes of PetKal et al :-)

Cheers,
Eyvind

Eyvind, you obviously did well with the combo.
600 II + 2xTC (and 800L + 1.4xTC) are best used on a pod, both from physical stress as well as IQ standpoint.

Thank you guys for looking and commenting!

Peter, I like hand-holding as it gives so much freedom for taking snap-shots like these. With the excellent 4 stop IS in the new super-teles I feel I can get away with ridiculously long shutter-speeds, most of the time. With a tripod I feel like wearing a straight-jacket. I will try using my mono-pod again, though. Just because you say I should

A friend took this picture of yours truly, in action, with the bare 600:

With the 2x mkIII the lens gets much more front heavy, but it is still a joy to use, IMHO

Eyvind, in that picture we can see that your lens hold/support shows a high level of proficiency. If you'd swap the stock foot for a low profile one ( e.g., from the 4th Generation Designs), you'd probably find that the lens would be easier to control when performing faster sidewise swings.(Unfortunatelly, the penalty of low profile feet is diminished functionality as a lens handle.)
