p.1 #1 · Any users shooting the 6D and 50 1.2L?

Seriously considering the purchase of a 50 1.2L for my 6D. I've had one on my 6D a few times at the local shop and the focus seems to work great - in the store. The guy behind the counter seems to think that issues with this lens were early in the production cycle, were overblown, and have for the most part been corrected.

And yet, you don't have to look very hard to find people having difficult AF issues with this lens. My understanding is that the 6D cannot be micro-calibrated like the 5D MKIII.

Should I pass?

Any 6D shooters having luck with this lens?

Thanks!

Any store worth their salt will allow a swap or return for a lens that is not up to scratch.

Pick one up a day of or day before you can get out and shoot as much as possible.

Spend the afternoon criticising your shots thoroughly, if you aren't happy, tell the store, your happiness with the purchase is what will bring them more business, so they will swap or return within reasonable times if you are unhappy.

But, I do not use this lens or a 6D, my advice is just general things to think about.

If by micro-calibrated you mean micro focused then yes the 6d will do it. Shoot a 50 1.8 for a while and see if that works. They are $100 and so worth it. Personally I would pick up the Sigma 35 before a 50 1.2.

I'm pretty sure the 6d has the microfocus adjustment. It should make a great combo!

I have both the 6d and the 50mm L. I Can tell you that yes you can do the focus microadjustment, although I have not done it myself because I did not have time yet (will do when I have a day free with all the lenses). Having this narrow DOF at 1.2, my lens will need some microadjustment, I can tell with the results I am getting. What I can also tell you also is that AF is slow with this lens, AF was faster with the 50mm 1.4.

I personally like very much the 1.2, but if you want a lens that is easier to play with check the 50mm 1.4.

CE28NN has lots of photos with the 6D, 50mm f1.2L combo in this still ongoing treat:

Hmm, I had the opposite results: my 50 1.2L focused a lot faster than my 50 1.4. I don't use a 6D so maybe it's different but my EOS 3, 5D2 and 7D all drove the 50 1.2L faster than the 50 1.4. Of course, perhaps that's splitting hairs as they're both pretty slow compared to even a slow normal zoom like the 24-105 L.

Oh, then it might be the 6D. Actually, I used the 50mm 1.4 on both a 1D mk II and a 60D but not the 6D. So I actually did not compare the 50L and the 1.4 on the same body... so you might be right. Anyway, this is quite subjective and as you say both are quite slow to focus.

That lens is murderous on focus recompose. I really wouldn't want to use it wide open with anything but cross point AF sensors.
