Need your expert opinions:
I just got a 300mm f2.8 AF-S II from Roberts Camera Ebay store. Good used condition however, I've noticed there is a grinding noise when I manually turn the focusing ring. Like if there is sand in there. Is this a normal noise from the 300mm model?
Also, on my D4 and D7100, it is severely back focused. Had to use a -20 on both of the bodies. Have not tried it on the D800e yet.
I called Roberts Camera this morning and they issue an RMA but I just noticed that they want a 15% restocking fee. Called them back and they said that they will check the lens for the issue I am having and if they find the issue then they will refund the full amount. I am concerned because on their Ebay post, they said it was tested and in working condition. What stops them from saying it works fine and charge me the restocking fee.
I bought it from them because I see they are a very reputable company, but now I am feeling a little uneasy about it.
I see that KEH have a flat fix rate, $230, which includes parts and labor. Should I just eat the $230 and send it to KEH and be done with it? I really do like this lens.

No doubt you need to return it unless you to take the KEH route. I don't think I would want to pay for shipping to KEH and pay $230 for a lens that was described as "tested and in working condition."
And I think Roberts will stand behind their good reputation.
I have the same lens and it should not be making a grinding noise. I had an MK I that was doing that and it was because the AF motor was failing. Cost of the motor itself if it has to be replaced is around $500-600. KEH's estimate is probably based on repairing an AF motor vs replacing one - but I bet they have plenty of used parts on hand as well.
Have not dealt with Roberts, but if they say it is in good working order and try to charge you the 15% then ask them to explain why its making the grinding sound as that is not normal. I don't think they will have a good explanation for that.
Dealt with Roberts many times and give them high marks. My experience would lead me to believe they will do the right thing. I look forward to the final resolution of this issue.
Thank you all for your inputs. Looks like sending it back is the right thing to do. Once in a while I like to make life interesting by buying stuff on Ebay...
yes, document first, just so you got some power. And don't skimp on the packaging returning it or they'll use that But they'll no doubt have no issue with it I'd say
This is a very high quality, accurate & rapid focusing lens, Ive just covered an air show with the II Series with a D600& it was stunning even with a 1.4TV, silent and very smooth zoom & focus operation. I would be very alarmed by back focusing by -20 and that should also be checked out & thoroughly tested with a documented technical report including test image results before you accept its return. Question; are any of your other lens back focusing? may be your camera should be checked out also.
Scott from Roberts Camera agreed that there is something wrong with the lens and has issued a full refund. They were very professional about it. To bad it didn't work out.
