Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for a bit, and finally decided to post up a photo of mine. I picked up my first DSLR just a few months ago, and I'm enjoying learning as much as I can. This is one of my first attempts at a long exposure shot.

specs: T3i with 18-55 kit lens @ 55mm. F22, 20sec exposure, using a Polaroid fader ND filter. I realize I could've cut the exposure time in half and achieved similar results. Feel free to critique.

Wow there is a lot to like about that shot.

It seems like a lot of us are racing for the most magnificent waterfalls with our fancy gear and yet you captured a great image from a little waterfall with entry level DSLR and a kit lens! Way to go!

Nice work!

It is very nice intimate detail of a little waterfall and leaves.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I was losing light and wanted to sneak in a few other subjects, so I only had time for a few clicks, but I was pleased with the outcome. Glad you enjoy it

Brad W, you bring up a good point. Before I even made my camera purchase, a friend of mine instilled the idea of "upgrade your eyes before your gear" into my head. Of course I wouldn't mind something better down the road, but for now I'll make the most out of what I've got.

Very cool! Keep up the learning. Actually as you go on and depending on other things like the speed of the water, I think you will find that you are able to cut the exposure time down to probably a second or two and still achieve the effect you want while retaining some detail in the water.

Nice composition and good processing. The colours are believeable.

pp and idea looks sound. perhaps the dof is the wrong way around as the leaf and behind are sharp, where as the falls should be the foremost sharp object.
dont forget that even at f20 and focusing that close dof is till somewhat limited.

Nicely done! The thing I like most of all is the lighting, it really makes the image.

Thank you again for the positive words, and making a noob feel welcome.

Mashuto, I tried the same shot at 5 seconds, and while the fall had a similar look, the water at the base was nowhere near as smooth.
