With the price now at close to $400 after 6% credit for this lens, what would you list as best uses for FF and/or Cropped camera?

I am considering for outdoor archetectural photos in NYC, using IS to take photos with smaller apertures (F8-F11) while still handheld.

Your thoughts?

My suggestion would be for taking photos. Potentially as a little hat if you could find a chin strap to attach to it.

Seriously though I see it as being used not specifically for a task but more because it's a great quality light weight lens. Anyone travelling or just wanting to carry something round with them all day regardless of what they might shoot would be considering this. In any case I don't think it is going to be the 'best' lens for the job but it is so compact you can always have it with you. It becomes the best lens for the job if it's the one you actually have with you.

Ha, ha, I was thing similarly.

I have a few primes around the 28 (24, 35) & am a sucker for a good sale.
The IS is a plus.
Was thinking about keeping it on my Elan 7 or possibly a Rebel Xsi for a go anywhere camera solution.

I have been thinking about my "lightweight solution" for quite sometime now. Just months before, when the 40mm Pancake was released, my thought about lightweight solution was my 6D with a 40mm Pancake, which is what I have now. Is it small and lightweight? Yes, kinda.

With this 28/2.8 IS, I am toying with the idea of SL1 with this 28mm. I've never seen the camera in person, but I've heard it is very very small.

So, yes, I'm a sucker for this sale as well.

28mm F 2.8 IS would make a good 'dead normal" lens on a crop, as the 40mm F 2.8 makes on a FF (1.6 diagonal=27.3mm so close enough)

I would personally love this lens for street photography.

I think 28mm is as boring as it comes, honestly... Especially at f/2.8.

Not that wide, not exactly any reach either. I would prefer anything more/less, such as 24mm or 35mm.

To me, it is just a bit awkward I suppose. But I could make it work I am sure

Haha, I'm afraid, at least on FF, I feel the same albeit I tried hard to like 28mm. Love 24 and 35. But on APS-C I liked 28mm for point 'n shoot and having IS would make it great for drinking beer and shooting.

Well, golly, jeepers, and etc.!

IMO, every focal length has its application. If you find 28mm to be boring, then you should move in a bit or move out a bit, and it'll be just like those very sexy, exciting, and not-boring 24mm and 35mm focal lengths (not that I don't have them, too).

OTOH, why don't you go out and get a Contax Zeiss Distagon 28mm f/2.8; shoot it for a while, and then tell me what you think about 28mm.

P.S. currently on Joe Walsh, Rocky Mountain Way.

28mm is a proficient length for photojournalism on a full frame. I ran a small newspaper decades ago, and my principal photographer used that length, among others. I think we published more of the 28s than the others. It seemed to be a more convenient FL for depicting multi-person interactions than other obvious choices, like 35mm or 24mm. And if you move in close on your subject you can apply notable wide angle perspective to your images. On full frame, I think of 28mm being a versatile FL like 35mm, but with a slight wide angle inflection. That said, I admire the photojournalistic possibilities of all of Canon's wide IS primes.

If only it were f/2! I'd buy it as an indoor PJ/event lens.

I bought this lens for taking event photos. It is small and 2.8 with IS, so I can shoot in very low light (and not spend a fortune). It also has a close minimum focus distance, so it works for things such as food photography. The colors are right on par with my other L lenses, so for now, it has filled a slot.

I have the 35L for street photos, but thought the IS on this lens would help for hand held architectural photos at f8 and smaller. Slept on it for a night, but when the deal was still available yesterday, I couldn't hold out any longer.
