p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which used body for under $200

First post in the Canon section.

I happen to have an old film "rebel" SLR and two entry level EOS lenses. A "kit" 24-85 and a 55-200 both f/5.6 This system was what my wife used until she decided she liked a digital P&S better.

Now I have a 14 year old daughter that has been borrowing my Nikon D200 because she likes the results better than the iPhone of P&S. I'm thinking of buying a cheap Canon body for the two lenses and giving her the kit. Yes I know the 24-85 is not very wide on the smaller frame size but she shoots all "people shots" and would be fine with a 24mm lens. In fast the 50mm f/1.8 would be perfect for her, maybe next year?

Question. The budget is $200 at the most (we are talking about kids who drop and or loose stuff) so what is the best body to look for. I think the 20D goes for that price as do some of the consumer type Rebel XT and the like.

Was there a transition in say the image processor chips or AF or sensor where one body is much better? I don't know a lot about Canon digital bodies. But I do know I'm not going to fall for the "for just over $200..." line.

You might be able to find a Rebel XSi for around that price. They are great.

The 20D and 30D are both still excellent bodies that go for a very low price. I think the 30D had quite a bit better rear LCD. Be careful about Canon D30 - much older body - not very good compaired to even the 10D.

I got my daughter a 30D a couple of years ago; she's carted it all over New England as she hikes, climbs, and otherwise sees beautiful things. It's been very good.

camera, flash, the two lenses you have, and a good backpack was a total of $600, 2 or 3 years ago. I've seen the 30D advertised for $200. The 30D is reputed to be a significant step up from the 20D.

same sensor, but a bigger screen, ability to do 1/3 stops, and larger buffer? As far as upgrades between models go, I wouldn't call it significant. used 20d goes for $150 or thereabouts nowadays, so I guess the price difference isn't that big anyway though.

I know its a bit above the price listed, and it is on eBay, but the Canon 40D is an excellent camera for anybody! Good luck with your search!

I've seen 40Ds go for less than $300 on CraigsList, but if your limit is firm at $200 then I would go for the 30D over the 20D. I've owned a 30D for years and it produces some great photos. I've also used a 20D a fair amount and they're similar in terms of IQ but the LCD screen is tiny. Considering the small price difference I'd go with a 30D, they're often in better shape too since they're newer. I think any of the three will produce better images than a Rebel in the same price range.

Both the 20D and 30D have really small screens. I recall having a really tough time telling what the hell on those wee things.

Yeah, they both look small next to the LCDs on my 7D and 5D3, but put a 30D next to a 20D and there's a significant difference.

Try to swing a 40D. A number of them on EBay have gone in the $225 range.

And don't forget you get ISO in the viewfinder! (only when you press the ISO button though).

The 40D is an excellent camera. I think it generally has better IQ than the 7D, although I don't have either of them, now. This topic was rather controversial last year. Never resolved, of course.

If the 40D is out of reach, then I think the 30D is a better choice than the 20D. Here's a "first impressions" comparison of the 20D vs. 30D that I posted on photo.net, in 2006.

had the 40D and sold it for 5D 3 years ago. Was a great body if kept to iso 800 or below.
I'd stretch for it, if possible.

When I felt like buying cheap lowend, I went for 400D (XTi). It was cheap, already had the AF that had some chance of focusing fast primes, and used CFs just like my other bodies.

With 24-85 it is a very good walkaround camera. I have both in silver, together they look like some sort of Lumix bridge camera.

The XSI is an unsung hero of the rebel line; first live-view, decent LCD, small, easy-to-handle body, 12 MP, Digic III...a Rebel will appeal to the needs and hands of a 14-year-old better than any of the xxD line.

Trust me on this one...
I have three daughters, the youngest, two teenagers. The XSI was my first Canon DSLR.

I'd look at a 40D or a 450D (XSi)
