p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Textbooks/Resources on lens design

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for resources (either online or printed) about lens design.

I have an understanding of physics, but I'm not an optical engineer. Something addressed more to a photographer than a specialist in optics.

I need the sort of information that would help me understand why a lens is designed in a certain way, why so many elements and groups, why this or that type of glass. Must be more on a cause-effect base than on a in-depth scientific explanation.

Thank you all!

Check out Roger Cicala's lens genealogy articles:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/08/lens-geneology-part-1
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/09/lens-genealogy-part-2

You could also ask him about lens design books -- I know he has quite a few.

The classic in the field is still the Rudolph Kingslake book,

For historical lenses, this might be the best:

I love my books written by Sidney F Ray: "Applied Photographic Optics" or much more basic "The Photographic Lens".

Kingslakeīs "Lens Design Fundamentals" or Smithīs "Modern Lens Design" go very deep into lens design - but are hard to understand too. I donīt have understand very much of them, but now and then I read and get more understanding.

But for reeengineering and deep understanding of lenses you need much more.
For this lens distances and curvatures are measured, glass is determined (probably with destroing the lens) and and the data is given a lens designer to compute it.
