p.1 #1 · Northern CA Redwoods/Rhododendron

Hi everyone,
Just wondered if anyone had any locations of note in Northern Ca for Rhododendrons and redwoods? I will be heading there at the end of May.
All thoughts welcomed!
Thanks
Richard

Anything alongside the road near in Del Notre St Park and the Damnation Creek trail. The State Parks are better than the National Park, where much was once cut. Also, Tall Trees Grove is absolutely worth the effort, even though there's few Rhodies. Good luck! Check out the Trinidad coast while you're there.

Hey Rich,

Marc named all the main spots, though you will see there are area's where they are all over. Most of my best shots from last year were right from the side of the Coast Hwy. One other thing I noticed from last year, is that the Rhodies bloom at different times in different places, so part of the fun is just driving/hiking and exploring to see where the blooms are, have been, or are about to bloom. There is quite a change in both elevation and climate in that area up there. You can be close to the coast where it's more moist, or on the other side where it's not as moist, all of which seems to affect the Rhodies and when they bloom.

Jim

PS. Here is a link to some of my shots from that trip last June to give you an idea. http://www.pbase.com/jimfoxphotography/redwood_national_and_state_parks

Hey Richard,

What a great link. I hadn't seen that one before. I hope you have a good trip! And don't forget, if the weather doesn't look good in Northern Cal, or the Rhodies aren't working well, or you just need a break, Oregon coastline is super close. You can zip up to Bandon Beach for example in just a few hours and spend a day or two there for something different.
