p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Kenko Lens2Scope

I was idly wondering about the possibility of using my Canon 500 f/4 IS lens as a spotting scope on occasion. I was dubious, because of the lack of back focus (not able to take a diagonal and astronomy eyepieces, I suspect).

I have stumbled across this Kenko "solution" for this. It would turn the 500 into a 50x spotting scope, considerably better than I would get out of just looking through the camera viewfinder.

But I don't have any feel for how well it works, but in terms of the mechanics and the optics.

Does anyone have personal experience with this interesting tool?

Thanks.

Mark

I've been looking at the Kenko as well, really the only ready made solution for EOS lenses. I used to have the Nikon lens scope converter which did the same thing for Nikon glass. My experience was that anything over about 200mm or 20X was poor quality at any distance except maybe first thing in the morning due to mirage. Worked great on the 200/F2 but the 400/2.8 was very limited for my use. The same could be said for any dedicated spotting scope though as well. The Kenko is likely limited to about F4 same as the Nikon was.

A 70-200 would be great with one of these.

You mean it can't project a larger exit pupil than f/4?

Anyway, here's some further info and some user experiences:

Yes, in that you could put an F1.4 lens on it but it would be no brighter than an F4 lens. I'm technically spreading rumour about the Kenko though, the Nikon actually came with instructions.
