From summer 2011:

1. Color

2. B/W

What do you think?

Thanks,

Sasha.

#2 for me but more for the comp than the B&W.

Sasha,

I agree with Rob here. I like the composition of the first one but the BW conversion is better than the color.

Hey Sasha,

I like the look of #1 the best. The B&W seems more like Gray&White. For me, I would darken the midtones more on the rock and tree. While I know it's foggy, #1 gives a feeling of being foggy. #2 just seems washed out. Hope that helps.

Agree with Jim, the color version looks foggy, not so much the BW. However, I like the composition of the BW version better.

I'd crop out the little rocks in the foreground. I find them distracting.

It might also be interesting to try de-saturating the first one or maybe just the yellow/browns in the rock and leave the greens in the tree. Make it more mystical?

I like both, Sasha.
The color works better for me, but the horizontal format works better .
I'm usually alone with this idea (well, me and Roger Mudd), but I think the best way to show the grayness of things is in color. In B&W you never know for sure.

Sasha, Nice shots. Definitely #2, did you cross the RR tracks and shoot from the beach on these? I love that spot, I have a nice sunset from there. Rick

The B&W has more potential...but for me is not done. I am with Jim that it needs more contrast work.

Thank you to everyone who replied, and sorry for delayed response - just flew back tonight from SLC. Looks like the best solution would be #2 in color. That's how I originally processed it but then got second thought.
To Rick Shrump -yes, that's the one, I really like the place. Did you try to look at it from south when you enter the city?

Great subject Sasha and great conditions. I too prefer the 2nd for composition and 1st for processing. I would say do that for 2 and maybe clone out the small rocks in the lower right and possibly and horizon level. Hard to tell but it feels like it is slightly off. Could just me at 3am

That would have been my comment had I not seen this post first. Just not enough contrast in the B&W. It looks washed out.
