p.1 #1 · Using filter holders or handholding GND filters

For those of you who are using graduated ND filters for landscaping.

Do you hand hold or are you using a filter holder?
Why?

Or are you doing everything i Post Processing using Exposure Bracketing?

I handhold filters very, very infrequently, because (1) I may inadvertently cause camera movement during exposure (I shoot my photos on a tripod almost without exception). (2) if I am doing multiple exposures, I would prefer that the GND be in the same position within the frame for every shot.

I have never used a filter holder for my GNDs in the decade or so that I've used them. I like the fact that with practice you can actually move the filter during the exposure to maximize its effect on one side or the other -- its handy when one side of the image has an object that is "taller" than the other, like a mountain. You do have to be much more careful of camera movement. Given the DR of my current camera though, I may just start blending when needed instead.

Handheld due to the flexibility of moving the filter during exposures.

I use a filter holder for several reasons. One is I almost always bracket the shots and would not want filter movement between shots.

Two, I have hand held on lenses where the lens does not protrude, but this does not work on a lens like the 17TSE, with a blubeous front element you must hold it away from the lens and light strikes the backside of the filter and makes for flare and reflections in the image.

It would also not work on a Samyang 14 or a Zeiss 15.
