Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 OS lens & USB dock delayed
Sigma today announced the pricing and availability of the Sigma USB dock and the newly redesigned 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM "Sport" lens category.

The 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lens will be available in early May for the street price of $3,599 in Sigma and Canon mounts. The USB dock, which is compatible with lenses from Sigma’s new Global Vision lineup, will also be available in early May for the street price of $59.

yeah its still listed as pre order over here for £3599 . I would hope to see it come down a fair bit once released

the USB dock is less than was first indicated ($100+ ) which is a good thing. I think they should really be including it in with the lens . or at least as some sort of lens registration gift
but it should be well worth having the dock

Looks interesting, would this work with the 1.4 or 2x teleconverters?

The multiple focus adjustment is cool to no end.

However for primes they should add an aperture-related option as compared with the focal length-related option for zooms. That would resolve once and for good problems like focus shift.

That may require a camera software change. The lens probably does not know what aperture the user has selected (until it is too late to change focus).

If Sigma keeps on improving like this I might have 50% sigma lens arsenal soon. A year ago I would not even think of buying a Sigma.

I'm with you. Especially if Canon keeps almost doubling the price every time they improve a lens.

+1

I am seriously considering this lens. I'd like to see a head to head shoot out with the Canon 300/2.8 (version 1 - since they're in the same price range). This is certainly a big change in just a few months, go Sigma! Glad to have options.

But if the lens receives the information from the camera at the last moment, it means there's a lag time before the shutter is actually triggered to let the iris close down to the selected aperture, so maybe the same time could be used for a slight AF adjustment too. Just guessing, of course.

I like to see Sigma 300mm f/2.8 OS weight about the same and IQ near to Canon 300mm 2.8 II and most importantly cost only 1/3 of Canon

This should be similar to Sigma 500mm f/4 OS as well

Well yes a prime with OS would be nice .

I have both the prime 300/2.8 and the 120-300 OS and I have to say the prime is a joy to hold and use but the zoom trumps it for IQ (not that the prime is bad)
The prime is much smaller and lighter .

But I can't see a new one being as small (the OS stuff has to go somewhere) and it really won't be a 1/3of the canon .

Oh and a 500/4 (or even 4.5) with OS would be great .

I almost bit on the prior version of this lens as it was an attractive package. This looks even better. Hopefully "street price" will drop some. And I have to echo the sentiments about Canon's new lens pricing. Not sure who they think can afford to pay such prices particularly in a still basically stuffed up world economy. The 70-200 (a great lens) has been my "bring home the bacon" lens for sports, but there has been many a time I really needed 300mm. The 300mm f/2.8 prime lacks flexibility for sports and I still need both my lungs so can't afford one.

There really isn't much pressure on Canon to lower prices of the super-teles. They pretty much have a monopoly on that segment of the market. Maybe Sigma will have an impact on that with their emphasis on quality as they upgrade their sports line of lenses. I'm really hoping the 120-300 is a winner as I much prefer the flexibility of a zoom over a prime.

If the IQ is on par with the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II at 300mm / 2.8 and it can AF as quickly, may need to sell the Canon.

Ian-Great shots of the zebras, but that's a static subject compared to a running back streaking down a football field. Anyone care to share some field sports photos with the current version? This is where I've read that the lens is slow to track focus, and trust me, I'd love for this new "sports" version to be a winner.
