p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Am I crazy? D800 -> D700...

I've been using the D800 for the better part of a year now. Spectacular camera. But I'm starting to think it's too much. Hoping someone could talk me out of 'downgrading' to a D700. I don't need (or want) 36mp files, but I got to admit, for wildlife, the cropping ability is great. The autofocus is great, no complaints. And the dynamic range really helps. But other than that, I'm having a hard time convincing myself to sell the camera and go back. I figure I could free up about $1000, and use that towards more glass. So really, I'm just looking for random opinions to help me make up my mind.

One thing that really bothers me with the D800, all my images are tilted. I've never had this problem with any other body. Now I have to consciously level the camera. It's hard to explain

Also, on a side note. How does the dynamic range of the D3s compare to a D800? I find myself boosting shadows fairly often (or turning down highlights).

I've got a pair of D-700's and love them. So much so, I have hesitated to buy the 800E. However, from what I see on F/M - the 800 is a super camera, and I won't try and talk you into selling it. IMHO, you will regret parting with it soon after doing so.

lol, i was just thinking the same thing . . . sell my D800 and pick up another D700 but then . . . after shooting a high school musical on monday and some wildlife i came back to my senses.

i think the D800 & D700 combo gives me the best of both worlds. If or when I need 36mp files I have it. And with a D800 you can crop like never before. No doubt something you will miss.

And the D800 sensor is excellent. I am amazed at the DR, clean ISO, and how well it takes sharpening.

A D3s? Looks like your hope of freeing up some $$ just went out the window.

Why not split the difference and go D600? Newer tech than the 700, not as big/bulky/big files as the 800. I had the D800 and it for a D600. Haven't missed it yet.

I use both the D800 and the D700 together and I do like the combo. I have to say that I was a diehard D700 guy and wrestled with the D800 after getting it but after playing around with a few settings, bettering my personal technique, AF tuning a few lenses, and spending some time adjusting my post settings, the D800 has come alive. I'm on the verge of buying another D800E but would probably keep the D700. It still produces outstanding pictures.

D600? Just not enough camera for me. Low flash sync speed, control layout and D7k focus system kills that one for me. I had a D7k and the body of the D600 is virtually the same in handling. When I went to the D700 there was just no comparison.

Try downsampling your images to 12MP for a little while. The file sizes out of camera will still be large, but then they'll shrink and I think you'll find that the detail and richness of color from the downsampled D800 stomps all over the D700.

And once in a while, when you need to shoot large so you can print large, you'll thank those 36MP for saving your bacon.

Would you consider trading for a D3s? That would be my plan of action if I was in your position.

I did it after a year with D800/E. Since I am a jpeg shooter, couldn't feel more happier.

Now that I've seen what D800 is capable of doing, no way will I ever consider trading for D7000. BTW I have D7100. After the firmware update my D800 is as good as they get. AF is on par or slightly better than my 5DIII. It is now my work horse.

I won't even for a minute consider trading it for anything.

That's what I was thinking. Smaller files, pro-body, dual CF slots, faster FPS, much better battery life. But less cropping and a bit more expensive. But I'm not sold on on downgrading the DR.

It crossed my mind for a second, but I don't like the feel of the D600.

I'm pretty sure you are right. I really wish I could afford a D4, that would solve all my issues, but it's not feasible at the moment.

Explain how the images are tilted? You mean you have to rotate a vertical one?
If that is what you mean: go to playback menu and then select rotate tall, set to on and images rotate automatically.
And NO way I am ever going to trade my D800E for a D700 or lower. A D3s would be for different purposes but the only thing it's better at is fps and body. Autofocus, image quality and even high iso is better on the D800. Nothing compares to the D800 dynamic range.
Battery life is also relatif, if the D3s has over 100k shutters and used the same battery over the years, then you can't expect it to be in top condition. So you maybe even have to buy one of these (EXPENSIVE) batteries. SD-cards are cheaper and you can still use 1 CF card. (I use 1 Hoodman Steel 32GB CF and 1 Sandisk Extreme pro SD)
If the D3s had the D800's autofocus and sensor and still have the fps, I wouldn't hessitate 1 second. But until then I'm settled with my lovely D800E .

Since I have a D800E my D700 is barely used. In my last travel I used the D700 about 2% of the images.
Today I traded my D700 in for a D7100. The D700 served me very well for over 4,5 years.

it's nothing the camera is doing wrong, just something about how I'm holding the body. Imagine the horizon, and now tilt it 10 degrees. That's what is happening to me. Never had an issue with other bodies, its not a big deal, I just have to be more aware now for some reason.

Do you have a link to your work? Unless the D800 is causing more problems than it solves, just think of your camera as a bird, and your hand as... well... a hand.

Went through a similar quandary. I'm not a pro so my requirements aren't as rigorous as y'all who do this for a living; my experience with the D800 was brief but illuminating. I found the smaller body cramping up my right pinky and ring finger when holding it for too long. The grip would have helped but its price ridiculous without a built-in GPS. I also found focusing my fast MF glass more challenging since my D700 had a Katz Eye screen. The AF was faster but the rear LCD had a funny greenish/yellow cast with images displayed. My computer was also working mightily in the image transfer and processing on account of the file sizes. For all these reasons but because I do use MF lenses more, I decided to go back to the D700. No regrets.

Try shooting fewer frames instead.

I occasionally post things here in the nature/wildlife section, I'll find the links and post back
