At the end of the 2011 season, I discontinued my motorsports photography (along with my own racing), mostly because of cost and time issues. I sold my 300mm f/2.8 and my 600mm f/4, and sold my 1D Mark 4 and bought a 5D Mark 3.
The racing club I shot for previously (at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah) found themselves without a regular photographer this season, and asked me if I wanted to come back and shoot some more. I told them that I really didn't have the same gear setup as before, but that I'd help them out for the first couple of rounds of the season. I wasn't sure what to expect from the 5D Mark 3. It certainly has an amazing AF system, though it doesn't shoot at 10 FPS like the 1D did.
I really didn't think my 70-200 f/2.8 IS II would get me close enough to the action, even with my 1.4x and 2x TC's, so I rented a 300 f/2.8 for the weekend - one of my all-time favorite lenses. I must say that I came away really impressed with the capability of the 5D Mark 3 as well!
April and May have always been my favorite time of year to shoot at Miller, for obvious reasons. The backdrops are really quite stunning. Here are some examples from this past weekend:
